Speech and Debate High School team?

I kinda want to try out speech and debate next year in high school. are colleges and jobs impressed when they see that you've been in speech and debate? or is it considered just for fun? Also; what happens at the competitions? are they hard, and what exactly do you do? you don't have to be too specific. thanks!

according to my debate teacher the colleges love speech and debate. it is fun though. at the competitions you debate and speak the whole time. afterwards you go home.
