Sparring/fighting questions (regarding dodging and fighting the armed)?

Hi everyone, I just have a couple questions. The first one is basically how to quickly maneuver or dodge in a fight, to avoid a punch or other attack? I know guarding can be helpful, but I'd like to be able to dodge since who I fight isn't limited to unarmed people, and blocking against weapons if you don't have one yourself isn't so easy, which leads me to my next question.

What would you say are some good tactics to fighting someone "armed" while not armed yourself? I know it can be done, but I'd like to know how. =) By the way, I'm not talking about guns or anything, more like swords, shinais, sticks, etc. So, thanks for the help!

Generally speaking you must pay attention to your attacker, you must have a clear mind free of fear/fright. The saying scared stiff is generally true as in people are less nimble when scared. You cannot have tunnel vision if you wish to be evasive of your attacker. A level focused mind is that of a winner.

Depending on the size of the weapon i.e. sword, shinai, stick, those three you must make the weapon ineffective. My suggestion is that if you have the ability to get in close to them, use that to your advantage. Example, a man with a 33 inch bat has an effective reach of about 6ft give or take a few inches for arm length, now take that same man and have him stand face against the wall and try and use the bat effectively. Isn't going to work, he needs space as he would with a shinai, stick etc. With a sword you add a blade into the mixture where the swing and cut stroke may not be effective, but pressure against the blade is. So gain control of what controls the sword and you have control of the fight. If you wish to elude get as much space as you can, again with the clear mind you can see your attackers movements with time to react.

Then once all is said and done I would suggest going and getting your ccw so you can carry your handgun on you where ever you go. Just sayin, just sayin

If you want to improve your reflexes, have a friend take a staff or any sort of stick and have them lunge it at your face. You on the other hand will practice dodging by only using your hips and pivoting your feet. As you practice more and more your abilities to sense the angle a punch is coming from will increase.

As for tactics against a knife the best thing to do is to rush in and attack. Strike before he strikes, don't be afraid to get stabbed or you will get stabbed. Wing chun and Krav Maga are good techniques.

With guns, it's better off negotiating, give them what they want. It's your life or a few bucks...

Where are you living that you have to fight random people walking around with swords, shinai and sticks?

Your best bet is to evade and escape.Weapons generally give the holder an advantage. With training (especially weapon retention), that likelihood increases greatly. If you aren't armed or have realistic training you can expect to take some serious damage if you don't get away quick.

A good instructor will tell you that when defending against a weapon there is always a good chance that you will get hurt. Your training would teach you how to move, trap, disable or disarm and escape. Advice on the interwebs isn't going to be a lot of use to you without the years of practice and instruction that form a reliable base of techniques.

Find a good teacher in your area and avoid the places you're likely to find trouble. Good Luck.
