Episode 216: "City Sushi"

The mid-season finale airs tonight at 10 PM Eastern. Here is the synopsis:

From the preview it looks like another Randy episode, or at least he'll have the B-plot.

:sigh: Really? An episode about cRAP music?

Oh no... no they DIDN'T just do that with a classic song.

They're going to see X-Men: First Class? This won't end well. At all.

Hey, Mr. Popper's Penguins looks like it'll actually be fun, something a Jim Carrey movie hasn't been in a long while.

Wait... didn't Stan's parents already seperate, divorce, and reunite several seasons ago?

A mid season cliffhanger? They haven't done this since season 1.

Egh, pretty bad episode, with the exception of that great last scene and montage. I'd like to believe that this would mean that the show would change, but I doubt it

Well that was.......depressing. Is this supposed to be a mid season finale? Because it looks more like I'd expect a series finale to go down. :(

This felt like it would have made a good series finale. I'm sure that everything will be back to normal. Though, I do wonder if this is Trey and Matt's way of being self aware and wondering if they plan to call it quits?

Wow, this was a pretty interesting and humorous episode (although the second act was a little tedious and annoying). I liked some insight into Randy's irrational behavior and the 'britches' parts, but I'm rather offset by the ending. Since this is only the midseason finale, I am pretty sure there will be resolution in the fall premiere. It's still interesting though, Kyle and Cartman are shown getting along, which might affect their behavior towards each other for the rest of the series. I think that goes well with the statement in the series about tastes and preferences changing as you grow older, a message I felt was nicely conveyed through much of the episode's events. I am curious on how they will fix the Marsh family's 'cynicism'. Honestly, Sharon's dialogue about how things return to status quo seems to indicate that perhaps they won't even resolve the cliffhanger and return to the standard as if no change occured. I guess we will have to wait untill October to see ;).

Not necessarily, the show's been renewed for 2 more seasons. But I agree, the edning was depressing and left me bummed down. Because the ending was sad and that I can't believe we have to wait for 3 months for the second part. They have to stop doing 2-3 parters.

I don't think this is a multi-parter more as it is a general status quo-changing episode, assuming they don't pull an ATHF and handwave things back to normal in the next episode.

Hmmm this one really is a hard one to figure out. On one hand it's a bunch of repeitive crap jokes in a row mixed with another wacky Randy plot and really though some of the shots at pop culture are good (The Zookeeper, L.A Noire, Mr. Popper's Penguins trailer) it's not really a good SP to sit through. Then again... could that be the point? By the end Sharon points out she's also sick of Randy's stupid wacky hijinks and the same plot over and over again and just resetting. And it kind of hints home that the getting older metaphor isn't just about the Marshes but the creators as a whole: Of Matt and Trey not being able to enjoy the world and anything in it like they could before and being cynical of pretty much everything. I mean there's a point where you talk about and make fun of so much crap you tend to make crap yourself and in that regard this episode is actually interesting. Espiecally the whole ending. I mean are they really going to try mixing things up with Randy moving away from the rest of the family for good or is this just another hting they'll just reset? Has Stan actually further drifted away from the others? Can Kyle and Cartman actually wind up getting along based on that look they showed each other? Is this Matt and Trey signifying they know everything goes same old same old crap and are just acknowlding it, or are they actually going to try developing and changing things up? Actually making the show different and come next October actually keep the ending here constant? Hard to say but if they actually do it'd be at least interesting and might actually lead to some permanent character development. But if not well... that probably makes this episode more lackluster then it was before.

And really there are a lot of wasted potential in this one. The whole tween wave could of been explored more then had a couple of refrences tied to it, espiecally since there was a newsreport and then... really nothing happened with that. At least name some tween bands or something. And then there's the whole two old guys wanting to go for the pants which though said is being wacky did just feel pointlessly tacked on. And like I said an overabundance of crap jokes even more so then something about a character literally seeing crap everywhere. Really a lackluster end to the season and though not terrible left a lot to be desired. Then again maybe that's just M&T acknowledging that's the best they can do now but I doubt it as I did like a good amount of the recent episodes when they are trying their hardest. Really a hard one to judge but still it's more interesting to think about the future ramfiications then the comedy as a whole.

Given the way it ended, I think I may have made a smart choice in skipping this episode.

From the gist I'm getting at Facebook, this episode appears definitely appears to be a "take that" by Trey and Matt, be it one that suggests that they are tired of writing new episodes of South Park (especially given the success of The Book of Mormon) or one that targets the fans who feel that the show is going downhill in recent years due to it being on for so long (while South Park does have a number of problems, it's more invovled certain episode types, as there's still a few good episodes each season).

Wow, this one did a great job of encapsulating what South Park is really about, if you guys wouldn't have pointed out that they have 2 more seasons I might have called this one the end. Brilliant satire underlined with poop jokes and some ridiculous B-plot, that could describe nearly any episode of this show. Gotta say this one was kind of relatable to me, I know around that age I got really cynical and pessimistic, something I've never been able to completely shake off, and my parents separated (Another thing I've never been able to completely shake off).
