South Park - "Fishsticks" - Talkback [4/8]

Of course we can all claim that we've heard some form of Fishsticks, fish d**$ joke in our life (this is my personal favorite spin on it).

But the point of this episode wasn't really the joke. It was on the levels of not who got it and who took credit for it. For Kanye it was all about him being so egotistical and claiming to be the greatest that he ended up thinking that he was actually being insulted and just not getting the play on words. I liked his whole ignorance while proclamining his greatness and trashing of Carlos mencia, and then thinking he was a gay fish at the end. (The audio reverb was defintley like a few of his songs. I actually like several Kanye West songs truthfully. I mean "Loveless" kind of sucks but "Love Lockdown" was good. And he's kind of a theif as well considering what he did to Daft Punk with his "Stronger" song but I'll digress). This felt more like a classic celebrity slam as well. The Jonas Brothers had a good lampoon in the opening but some of the later ones haven't really been too good (like how Martha Stewart last week just felt so unncessary). However this was also just on Cartman and his whole make believe element which really traces back to the early days of his character where he would pretend that people think he's smart and cool and not fat at all. He's gotten so use to it that everytime he remembers something he just thinks of himself as more and more awesonme and that he slays dragons and jew bots. I like how Craig pointed out Jimmy should just split the money with him before Cartman's ego got out of hand and Kyle saying Cartman's the kind of guy to do such a thing. As well as Jimmy's shock at finding it out. Thoguh this wasn't as much a Jimmy ep as I wanted I did like the Cartman/Jimmy dynamic a lot actually. And to be fair even if Cartman didn't come up with the joke just supporting it and actually asking for something other then fruit did help get it going. Besides Cartman was able to get them know for it which is something. Still this ep to me is much more in the league of the first two in qulaity compared to the more mehness of the last two eps. And in general it's good to laugh at something that isn't a big issue or fart jokes again and again.
 
Despite what the episode had us believe, I think Cartman should have at least got some credit for the joke.

I mean think about it. Jimmy's mom puts out some fruit. Cartman asks Jimmy if he has anything else to eat. Jimmy then says there might be some fishsticks in the freezer.

If Cartman hadn't been there to ask what Jimmy had to eat, Jimmy would have probably would have never even thought about fishsticks and went on eating fruit and coming up with another joke.

Kind of makes you think, don't it?

Here's the thing. Family Guy wouldn't be able to pull of an episode like this so brilliantly. They'd probably end it with Peter and Brian putting a trail of candy into a crate and send off Kanye to Area 51.

The episode had a lot of great ideas. It was a nice sort of dressing down of celebrity egos like Kanye.

However here is what a lot of people are missing. It also addressed something comedy writers do a lot. Taking credit for a joke. A lot of comedy writers will claim they were responsible for this joke or that joke. Some comedy writers act the exact same way that Cartman and Jimmy did over a stupid, lame joke. Dana Carvey apparently held a grudge over Mike Meyers over Austin Powers. Carvey I think felt he had some involvement in the creation of that franchise I forget exactly what. And I mean at the time Meyers became a huge superstar while Dana was kind of floundering making MASTER OF DISGUISE and what not.

Another poster pointed something out that was really interesting. Cartman didn't write the joke, but had Cartman never gone to Jimmy's house, Cartman wouldn't have prompted Jimmy to mention fish sticks and come up with the fish sticks joke. So there you go :D . He should've just given Cartman half :D .

Personally, I think the funniest stuff related to this episode is the stuff that's happening in the media/celebrity blogs in response to it. Rolling Stone had this to say:



Good to see Rolling Stone is doing their part keeping Kanye's ego in check. [/sarcasm]

Also, how old is the dude writing this? Because I *did* see the Berlin Wall come down, on TV at least.
 
It desperately needed a B plot, because there just wasn't much material to work with. After watching it with a friend, he remarked, "I think South Park's running low on ideas". I wouldn't say that's always true, but in this case, it probably was.

That said, despite not knowing who Kayne West is, I enjoyed Kayne at the blackboard trying to piece together common adjectives, and decapitating Carlos Mencia's head over a simple joke misunderstanding (reminds me of the fat guy getting killed over a candy bar in that Friday the 13th movie). And Cartman's increasingly delusional flashbacks, where he keeps making himself look better and better each time, were good for a laugh.

My God, this episode is just too perfect.
The fishsticks joke, Cartman taking credit and believing Jimmy has a huge ego, Kanye's huge ego, the Gay Fish song, Carlos Mencia getting owned, everything!
The Mencia parts were brilliant, because they were so true. I also didn't catch the fishsticks joke the first time though, but it was so funny when I got it.

9.5/10, Stone and Parker really outdid themselves. :)
 
Stop hatin' on Mencia! He's a hilarious comedian! The reason people have so much spite over him is because he rose as Dave Chappelle was crashing and burning.

Folks, Chappelle wasn't even funny to begin with, ok? His entire act consisted of bashing white people, which was only funny because of the whole political correctness atmosphere. Well, it would've, I guess been funny if he'd had good punchline timing, and all that...which he didn't. And then, he jumps ship to South Africa and admits he really does hate white people, nullifying his entire act, and proving he was just a racist prick the whole time.

Carlos Mencia makes fun of everybody..and he does a great job of it.

But back to the episode...loved it. They managed to take a one-note joke, and use it the entire episode, and keep it funny. Only South Park can do that, and believe me...others have tried.

I strongly disagree.


I've never seen Chappelle's Show in my life, so it has nothing to do with that. I've seen some Mind of Mencia and it was soul-suckingly terrible. You're free to think otherwise, but trust me, when people don't like something it's usually just because, well, they don't like it.
