South Park - "Coon vs. Coon and Friends" - Talkback [11/10]

I was sure it was gonna be some kind of fakeout with one of the boys having created the comic book, but it's all canon. Kenny's character arc is pretty much explained and over with now it looks like.

The ending was rushed, yes, but I did like how Mintberry Crunch wound up being the one to save the day, though poor Kenny still has no answers as to where his powers come from.

No Captain Hindsight
No reason why no one can remember Kenny's death.
Entire 1/2 an episode worth of plot squished into 3 or so minutes.
Reuse of LeBron joke from last week.
No continuation of the BP/DP story.

And more, that is just off of the top of my head. This episode, while it had some funny moments, primarily Justin Bieber, was so disjointed and dropped some of the plots of this three parter, while failing to deliver on the promise that we would find out more about Kenny.

2.5/5

Agree that this episode fell victim of one major problem that South Park has had recently: rushed endings (especially given how there's no resolution whatsoever to the Captain Hindsight sub-plot).

Of course, you have to give Trey and Matt credit for how to handle the Mysterion thing without retconing the ending of the NAMBLA episode (by having Kenny's mother give birth to a new "body" for Kenny to enter, with the body growing overnight).

1: Its even worse when its a rushed ending to a 3 part episode. 3 episodes of build up (more like 2 really) to a Kenny vs Cuthulu (sorry about spelling) battle all for it to be wrapped up by a narration, and not even by Kenny! Incredibly rushed and unfocused.

2: They already changed the continuity by suggesting that no one remembers Kenny dieing, when previous episodes (Cartmanland for example) say that they do remember. If they already changed the continuity, I would have hoped that they would change Kenny's immortality reasoning, seeing how they were building up to it.

All 3 of these episodes were all very disjointed with each other. As compared to Imaginationland, it really feels like this was being made up as it went along.
Episode 1: Started off with Cartman trying to recruit a new member and deal with the BP oil spill.
Episode 2: Changed entire focus to Kenny while minimizing BP/DP and Captian Hindsight.
Episode 3: No character development other than Bradley. No progression on Cartman/Cuthulu relationship at all, with so much potential. No BP/DP and Captian Hindsight, they were written out like their inclusion in part 1 was a mistake. Rushed conclusion.

It seems to me like part 1 was going to be its own single episode, but at the last minute, Matt and Trey decided to expand it, and change its focus.

Overall trilogy is a 3/5 from me. South Park has been off this half season.

Awesome episode, even better than last week's, but I will admit that the twist w/Mintberry Crunch annoyed me.

I really liked how they tied the gag about Kenny literally being reborn after he dies into what they revealed in these last few eps (rewritting it so no one remembers Kenny dying once he wakes up in his new body the next morning), but I HATED that the epic build up was deflated (imo) by having Mintberry having real powers and fast-forwarded saving the day with him getting all the credit. Meanwhile, no one realizes what Kenny just went through to try and save his friends.

I hope we get to learn a little more about Kenny's story in future episodes, and have his friends realize the truth about him before the series ends. I just think it's so sad what he has to go through (both willingly to help others, and unwillingly by means of horrificly bad luck), and would like him to get the answers he's looking for and the respect he deserves.

Great storyline for Kenny! I hope that if they release it on dvd as a movie, like they did with Imaginationland, that it'll be uncut and add a little more to the story.

Yeah this arc unlike others (like say Imaginationland) actually did get better as it went on. Probably because the more it went on the less it focused on BP and Captain Hindsight, the weaker parts of this arc and gave us a lot more of what we really wanted to see: the boys as Superheroes. Specifically focusing on Cartman, Kenny and... Bradley?

Yeah really out of all the obscure characters to get a spotlight of the boys I wasn't even thinking of Bradley (hell I didn't even really know the kid's name or bother really remembering it). I thought out of everyone people like even Dog Poo would get a focus episode before him, but this in a weird way was his focus episode. I like how we got to see him try his hand at explaining the plot and trying to point out just exactly what his powers are, running off and then later saying he was couragesly watching Judge Judy, finding out that Henreitta is his sister (Which makes sense considering how the rest of her family is so bright and cheery. Also reminds me of something else though nothing is coming to mind right now), trying to find out "his" origin story with Kenny, and then finding out that he is in fact an alien child with actual powers who has the ability to not only shoot Mint and berry but also save all the kids and the entire world. Yeah I guess it was sort of a rushed conclusion but that's also the point: that it was such a ridicolous out of left field turn for such an otherwise un-noteworthy character. Actually reminds me of my friend telling me that there would be a "key" boy whose even more obscure then Craig who would save the day during a multi parter and looks like he was totally right.

I did like how this one focused on Kenny as well, who wants to save his friends as well as end his curse. Yeah I have a feeling he's told the other boys about his ability not to die before and may of even killed himself just to prove it but they never really listened. I was kind of hoping for an explanaiton that actually tried to bring up all the loose ends throughout the run of the show (such as whey Kenny wound up dying for an entire year after "Kenny Dies") but I wasn't expecting them in a pretty cool nod to contniuity going with the "Kenny's mother actually births him every time" explanation from "Cartman Joins Nambla". I mean that was a continuity rewrite I was thinking they would get rid of and instead they used it to their advantage blaming it on the whole Chtulu thing. Actually you can probably do a long indepth explanation as for why Kenny disappeared and reappeared several times now but they did other good bits with him: him actually killing himself in front fo the boys and pointing out dying hurts, him jumping into spikes to get to the real world, Kenny calling out Coon and Chtulu and pointing out super heroes don't just do what's good for them, and his annoyance at the end by just wanting to put an end to his misery with a bullet to the brain (I think this is the most Kenny has ever died in an episode. Unless we count almost deaths at least).

And finally Coon and Chtulu had a lot of good bits. I was wondering why Cartman didn't just sick Chtulu on his mom but maybe he does have a soft spot on her and likes using the Lebron James strategy. I also like Cartman saying that Kyle and Stan and the others became evil even though he's the one who went bad (though Kyle has it wrong. Lex Luthor and Superman did team up as seen in Justice League Unlimited "Destroyer"), and banishing the team to the dark dimension, using a kitty strategy (this time with hints of Merry Melody I believe or it could just be more Tortoro. Haven't watched that movie to know for sure) to tame Chtulu, having him destroy burning man, reporters, hippie girls and Justin Bieber and fans to make the world a better place (Hey that last one would of made things better) and then the end of him being put in Jail with Professor Chaos. Kind of wish Butters did more but I like him being in episodes and only being more a background villian.

So yeah a great third parter. Would of liked a little less of a couple of aspects (a little bit less of the kitty stuff and less exposition even though the superhero comic approach was good) but the best part of this trilogy. And probably this half season since "Insheeption" was mared by Matt and Trey not watching the movie they were spoofing. since a key movie wasn't specifically spoofed that dosen't apply here which is good.

Oh. My. God.

How hard I laughed at that... i think i bust something

And just had to love the mintberry-crunch twist at the end. That is a classic bait south Park twist... somehow ya never see it coming.
Though I gotta say I underestimated South Park; they took that retcon one step further than i thought they would. They proved me wrong and I damn well loved it

I thought this was a great episode....

I loved the Cartman/Cthulu scenes where he was acting like a kitten,(and of course as mentioned by other posters, his "kitten" self and Cthulu's reactions were a reference to the Looney Tunes Cartoon "Feed the Kitty",about a big dog named Marc Antony that befriends a tiny kitten)...

Cartman destroying things/people he hated(Synagogues,Whole Foods, the "Burning Man" Festival,Justin Bieber and his fans) "to make the world a better place" (for himself,of course...I loved how Kenny/Mysterion called him out on that)...

Kenny pointing out how much immortality sucks for him (even if you can't stay dead,it'd still hurt to die, especially if you died all the ways Kenny did)...

Bradley as "Mintberry Crunch"...especially his opening comic book, and the reveal that he was the one with powers to stop the Cthulu, not Kenny...Love the reveal that the Goth girl Henrietta is his older sister....and that he returned home just to flip her off now that he has actual powers...

Cartman/Coon ends up in his own holding cell along with Butters/Professor Chaos...

..and Kenny never gets his answer about his immortality, but the audience does,in a callback to the "NAMBLA" episode...

There have been a number of times when Superman and Lex Luthor DID team up, so yeah, Kyle was absolutely wrong on that count.

You talking the TV show, or just the comics? cause I do recall atleast once where they teamed up to take down the justice lords... and i don't know anything about the comics

The ending was very rushed, but I did love the twist at the end where it was revealed that Mint Berry Crunch had superpowers all along, and that everytime Kenny dies, that a new one is born, along with everyone ignoring that Kenny keeps shooting himself.

As for the three parter in whole, I wasn't really impressed with it. Maybe because it felt like the story was going at a snails pace, and that as a result, they probably realized it and decided that they needed to wrap things up in 22 minutes. But I really wasn't feeling this, but then again, I found this half season to be a disappointment.

Awesome/hilarious episode finale to the epic Coon/Mysterion 2 trilogy,

The highlights:
Bradley/Mintberry Crunch's narration and comic introduction was sweet.
Poor Kenny, immortality sucks for him, but the boys freaking out on Kenny's death was funny.
The Coon/Cthulhu's comic introduction rampage was sweet.
Cthulhu's "The Coon And Friends" t-shirt was silly, hehehe.
Eric scaring his mother by saying "what should I do?" was funny.
Kyle bashing line to Eric was so priceless.
Poor Butters/Professor Chaos to miss the action.
Kyle is so wrong, Superman & Lex Luthor did team up on the Justice League Unlimited episode, Destroyer.
Eric/The Coon and Cthulhu's Marc Anthony/Pussyfoot reference was hilarious, hahahahahaha, that cracked me up so much, hahahahaha:p:D:p, so reminding me of Eric's Bugs Bunny reference defeating Osama Bin Laden, hahahaha.
The Nightmare City dark dimension looks pretty cool.
Kenny/Mysterion's spike-impaled death was really painful, ouch.
Eric/The Coon and Cthulhu destroying the Burning Man festival and killing the reporter was great/funny.
Henrietta being Bradley's sister shocked/surprised me, but she's another terrible jerkoff sister worse than Shelly, hehehe.
Cthulhu killing Justin Bieber was awesome besides the Jonas Brothers' bashings, hahahahaha:D:D.
Kenny/Mysterion telling off Eric/The Coon was awesome, go Kenny/Mysterion!!!!!!
Kenny/Mysterion being brave to fight Cthulhu was sweet.
Bradley being the chosen one after Kenny/Butters/Craig and that he's an alien child born with mintberry superpowers totally shocked/surprised me:eek::eek::D!!!!!
Mintberry Crunch/Bradley saving the day defeating Cthulhu and getting revenge on the jerkface Henrietta was awesome, go Mintberry Crunch/Bradley!!!!!
Eric/The Coon's just desserts was great, but poor Butters/Professor Chaos stuck with him though.
Kenny/Mysterion dying and being reborn as a baby much like the NAMBLA episode ending was funny, but you guys are right that ending was pretty bad worse than the Imaginationland part 3 episode ending.
Shocking with Captain Hindsight/Tony Hayward not in the episode.

Kenny and Bradley being the major focus was epic, I hope Dog Poo, Kevin Stoley, Jason, Bertha(redhaired girl), or Leroy gets their "chosen one" roles in the future though.

RIGHT!

Ironically, Justin Bieber was in concert near my town last night. Don't know if it was over yet when the episode aired, but I'd like to think he was killed in my area on last night's South Park.

Well Captain Hindsight became a news reporter again in the second-part episode so I guess that's the conclusion for him...

As the other things you said I agree, I hate when their episodes get rushed at the end, especially when it's a three-part arc. But I have to admit, I like how they gave Bradley/MBC more background for him in the episode.
