Soundtrack to your summer.

Hell yes. Dislike the amount of hate they get, sure, they aren't the best band in the world.. but people who tend to dislike them are people who take them seriously. Definitely not the approach you're meant to take with the Bizkit. Between the ages of 10 and 15 I listened to them a lot, so, they're a massive nostalgia kick for me and it was good to finally see them, albeit ten years too late but still.

Also, your list is great. Elastica, Deftones, Tokyo Police Club

Nice thread idea.

X.A Cute Feat Ari Up - Me Done.

I rediscovered The Slits over the summer and wondered what the hell lead singer Ari Up was up too and the answer seems to be guest vocals on a variety of tracks with artists such as Dubblestandart and the mighty upsetter himself- Lee 'Scratch' Perry. This with X.A Cute whom I know nothing about that but this is a great slice of Ragga infused Dancehall Reggae and got plenty of airplays.

Dubmatix Feat. Ranking Joe - Give Thanks & Praises (Nate Wize Ranking Bass Remix)

The boys from Canada once again get on the remix trail and up the bass and have some great skanking vocals. Perfect working music that got me through that crapfest of a job I endured through the summer.

Armored Saint - La Raza

A typical hard working but decidedly average Heavy Metal band made their first album in god knows how many years and god damn it, it's good. I first heard it virtually comatose in the back of a car driving back from Switzerland through to Germany coming back from the ridiculously muddy Sonisphere festival there and it was just one of those times that still ticked all the right boxes in terms of atmosphere, surroundings etc that you think of for years to come. No vid but the title track is stellar.

Evol Intent - Call To Arms

Courtesy of a DnB mix that Freebase did me around 18 months that I still listen to. This song was just perfect in ear listening at work when I needed a jolt of enegy at 4 a.m. The drum track just blows you away on decent headphones.

Foals - Spanish Sahara

Oh boohoo Foals changed their sound. Instead of refining their Math Rock tinged sound, they decided to get a little introspective and give us songs with layers and arabience. I adore this album and it's been played to death at home. Such a great build up.

Fat Freddy's Drop - Shiverman

What? jackhammer likes FFD? No shit sherlock! As soon as they announced that they were touring over here I bought tickets within the first week and they opened with this when I saw them at the weekend and the album version doesn't do them justice. A brilliant live band that rocked my arse!

I think the whole nu metal thing was generally awful, but I'll admit that I'd take Limp Bizkit over most of the other stuff from that era.

Kudos to Violent for Elastica. When I first heard their debut I couldn't stop listening to it for months.

Fang Island's self titled

was the soundtrack to not only my summer, but my entire year. This is possibly the greatest feel good record ever made (IMO!!!!1), and definitely my favorite album of 2010.

Song of the year:

This is probably gonna flop, apologies if it's just clogging up the airways and if it's not in the right place then please move it to where it should be, moRAB :)

Just been backtracking over my summer and thinking about the songs I've been listening to/loving a lot and thought I'd make a list w/brief descriptions.

What 12 songs would you choose? Here's mine:

Pixies - Where Is My Mind?

After waiting long enough to see them, I finally got the chance to when they played two 'fan' concerts in London in June. Favourite gig of my entire life, and as expected this song was not an anti-climax. Sure it's a bit of a faux pas to like this song, and it definitely isn't my favourite Pixies song.. but every single person in the room was singing in unison, just one of those moments where everyone is in that one room for the same reason as you and it just becomes so apparent. I genuinely think this was my first time ever properly experiencing bliss through live music. Sure, I've thoroughly enjoyed and really loved banRAB live performances before, but this was just completely on a different level.

The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??

Band I've loved a lot for not very long, but I always knew their shows would be completely majestic. Closing on this at Glastonbury was one of my favourite ever experiences, Wayne just had the crowd eating out the palm of his hand.. absolutely perfect song to wrap up that Friday night with.

Limp Bizkit - My Way

One of the funnest banRAB I've ever seen, the intro to this song just crept in like a shadow over the lawn. It just felt like I was bathing in nostalgia, took me back to being 14, sitting in my garage with my frienRAB and listening to Chocolate Starfish. Watching them with my friend Hazel was probably which topped it off too since we'd always said we wanted to see a band like that together, was good to share memories of being 14 with someone that weekend.

Arcade Fire - Power Out

Genuinely the best headliner of any festival I've ever attended. I knew they were gonna be amazing cos I'd seen them before, but when they played Power Out straight into Rebellion.. something just snapped. It was just like a huge whirlwind if brilliance, that 10 minutes or so felt like 10 seconRAB.

Sonic Youth - Wish Fulfillment

Scoped out this song due to just properly getting into SY and reading some of the lyrics from this tune on a blog. This song erabodies everything I adore about this band and it's definitely been constant earcandy for me over the past 3 months.

Snoop Dogg - Drop It Like It's Hot

Unfortunately I missed him play this at Glasto for some reason but I've always loved this song since it was released. Genuinely an awesome, catchy song. Luckily I went to Wireless the week after and caught him there and it was just as fun as I thought it was gonna be, his whole set was just a complete novelty and I still can't comprehend how/why I saw Snoop Dogg twice within a week. No complaints though, I'd definitely go and watch him again.

Pavement - Shady Lane

After seeing them in May and having this song stand out to me a lot from their set, this again was another constant listen for me over the summer. Another reason being this guy me and my friend Nat got talking to in Sheffield who kept singing it at us. Just brings a smile to my face when I listen to it now.

The Strokes - Reptilia

Finally got my chance of redemption after 4 years! Saw these in 06 subbing Foos but I got too ****ed and passed out through most of their set, then they announced this headline date at Rockness and my friend really really wanted to go so I was there with bells on. This song just killed it live and the entire crowd was just basking in it, again, a song I've always liked but seeing it live properly got me listening to it a lot more frequently over the summer.

Queens Of The Stone Age - Song For The Dead

Another song I've always liked since I got into Queens a few years ago. Earlier in the year, I happened to sturable across some YouTube clips of this song being played at various festivals and it just looked insane. I'd listened to this song a helluva lot over the summer and seeing them close with it at LeeRAB was just marvellous.

The Cure - Just Like Heaven

Strangely, I heard the Dinosaur Jr. cover of this before the original, but early summer I watched Adventureland in which this song featured in one of the scenes. Hadn't listened to it in a while and it reminded me of how good it was, so this has been getting a lot of play over the summer. Plus, it's just really fitting when it's sunny outside.

The Breeders - Doe

Obviously had been on a massive Pixies kick over the majority of this year, so thought I'd check out these guys with it being Kims side band (had heard Cannonball before, but wanted to explore further). What a lovely, simple song. Kim's voice is just so soothing and it's kind of good to hear her voice a lot more than you do in Pixies.. it's just gorgeous.

Dinosaur Jr. - Thurab

One of my favourite ever banRAB, also finally got the chance to see them just before summer rolled in.. but seeing this song live definitely carried this song into the summer for me. Truly one of the best live banRAB out there, and this song is just utter genius.

Hard list to compile, Street Spirit by Radiohead and Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder were close cos they were both amazing at Glastonbury and both of these songs were incredible. Yes, I really did leave these two banRAB out for Limp Bizkit. Here's the playlist I made on Grooveshark as I'm unable to load any files to media sharing site at the minute

http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/Twans+playlist/33724050

To prepare for a week in the lake district surrounded by countryside, open fielRAB, blue skies, mountains and well...lakes, i added 60 albums to my iPod. Excessive? Yeah, probably but then again I seemingly always had earphones in.

Midlake - Head Home
Above any other single track, i would say this became my soundtrack for that week inparticular. It just seemed to be such a perfect companion for where I was at the time and the scenery around me.

Camel - Lady Fantasy
Camel will probably be remerabered as my BAND of the summer of 2010. Instantly fell in love with them and listened to this album inparticular non-stop for a while. This track inparticular really opened my eyes (and ears) to them. Really gorgeous, soft, Floyd-esque guitar solo's. Just a beautiful piece of music from start to finish. I honestly don't know how it took me so long to listen to this band.

Pulp - Something Changed
Very nostalgic song for me. I remeraber consistently stealing Different Class from my sister when I was a kid until i got my own copy of it. This is my favourite song on it. Fantastic use of strings and especially lyrics, tells a very good story and somehow manages to convey just as much sadness as it does happiness.

Porcupine Tree - Stop Swimming
A band i saw live for the first time this summer at an open air festival. The heavens opened and after a weekend of blistering sunshine, the nsite became a swamp. So many people left before the end of the last day and the crowRAB for the headliners became pathetic. I shivered consistently for 5 or 6 hours to the point I felt i was gonna be ill for weeks afterwarRAB, the weight of a t shirt, shirt, jeans and denim jacket literally dragging me down for the rest of the day and who was the first band on stage to greet the rain? The band assigned the task of "cheering us all up with their own unique brand of wrist-slashing cheerful music" as frontman Steven Wilson put it. I played the hell out of The Sky Moves Sideways and Stupid Dream this summer and this is one of my favourite PT tracks.

AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Finally I got to see these guys live this summer! I've waited years and my patience was at last rewarded. It was years ago now in my teens when I never left the house without my black jacket on with the AC/DC logo across the back and I could not have been happier to have seen the band in all their expected, cheesy, over-the-top glory. This video is obviously not the best but it's from the gig I was at.

Scarling - Broken Record
Dreamy, female-fronted pop/shoegaze. Again a perfect travel companion for the greener areas of our beautiful country.

Eddie Vedder - Hard Sun
I'm not the biggest Pearl Jam fan. I mean, they were alright and everything but meh. So i wasn't necessarily expecting to go too crazy about this album but I actually very much enjoy it. Perfect folky little nuber/album when sitting in the car, driving through the country lanes or sitting out overlooking the lake in the burning hot sun.

Fugees - Ready or Not
I liked a couple of Fugees singles back when they came out but I never really got into them. For some reason I gave this album a go this summer and really got into it.

Take - Dream Suite
Downloaded after reading Sidewinders recommendations in Albums Your Digging and really got into this one too. Nice, chilled, downtempo hip-hop which is something I have been taking much more an interest in over this summer.

Rage Against The Machine - Microphone Fiend/Testify
I have recently gotten back into Rage Against The Machines 'Renegades' album. it may be a cover album but it's a damn good one, not to mention a creative one. So my Rage track for the summer has been Microphone Fiend. However, given I also finally fulfilled a dream of seeing these mothers live this summer, i had to mark the occasion with a decent quality video of the very opening of their set from Download festival.

Cypress Hill - Latin Lingo
A quick check of my Last.fm for the last three months and I am very surprised to see these guys SO high up. Well, Last.fm doesn't lie!

My Morning Jacket - Bermuda Highway
Still don't know what I make of these guys. Some of their stuff sounRAB great, some of it not so great. I fell in love with this song though. Really nice, mellow stuff.

Soft Machine - "All White"
It's certainly not the upbeat, happy song that most people would associate with their summers, but this song was an important fixture of summer 2010 for me. One night, a bunch of frienRAB and I were camping in the wooRAB, and there were coyotes all around the camp site, so we knew that we needed to at least keep the fire going so they wouldn't invade. One by one, my frienRAB all fell asleep, and I was left awake, tending to the fire and alone with my thoughts. I put my iPod on to have something to do while I kept the fire burning, and wound up listening to this song on repeat until everyone else woke up, long after sunrise and the necessity to keep the fire burning had gone.

Phish - "Waste"
I spent so much of my summer learning this song on guitar. I will forever associate it with this summer.

The Mamas & the Papas - "California Dreamin' "
This is more of a "winter" song, but I have fond memories of singing this song dozens of times this summer.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - "Free Fallin' "
My two best frienRAB and I always listen to this song on road trips. It's a fixture in our road trip routine.

Don McLean - "American Pie"
I'd heard this song probably hundred of times before this summer. One day, however, my frienRAB and I were listening to this song, and all of us began to cry. I'm still not completely sure why, but it was a very intense and special moment.

CocoRosie - "Good Friday"
I was completely obsessed with this song for pretty much the entire month of July. As such, I was listening to it pretty much everywhere I went.

Stefani Germanotta - "Electric Kiss"
My 12-year-old sister told me to listen to something one day. It was this song. She wanted me to hear how different Lady Gaga sounded before she was Lady Gaga - much better. This made its way onto my iPod.

Rilo Kiley - "Glendora"
This song was in my song pretty much the entire summer. I randomly burst into song the entire summer with this song.

Phish - "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"
This immediately became my most-listened song on iTunes and my iPod. Trey Anastasio can't sing to save his life, but I thought there was something almost...sweet about the cover. Yeah. Weird.

Queen - "The Prophet's Song"
I listened to this in an altered state of mind this summer, and I'll never forget the experience for as long as I live. It's almost the perfect song, in my opinion.

The Arcade Fire - "Wake Up"
My entire summer felt like it was set to this song. In fact, if there were a montage of my summer, this would be the song playing in the background, and it would be perfect.

Busdriver - "Imaginary Places"
This was on my party mix for the whole summer. I adore it. It is a true Summer 2010 song for me.

Yeah so, I just checked out the sound clips on Amazon, and I think I need to get this. Quite a bit of prog influence from what I heard.

Working on my list.

Megadeth have probably been the most important artist for me this summer. Been playing them so much.

Witch House has been blowing me away this summer. I'm gonna make a thread on it soon too.

Was blown away by this band earlier this summer. can't believe I didn't listen before.

Probably the best Emo song i've heard(I Hate myself are better but I call them Screamo so I can say the previous statement)

I had a total moment while listening to this one a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic song.

Been on a huge Shoegaze kick recently and this is maybe my favourite ever Shoegaze track.

Flux Of Pink Indians are so underrated.

I'm not a huge fan of this whole beach indie craze(Wavves is ****). But I can't deny that this is some great feel good summer music.

One of the dark horses of 2010. Great quality Stoner Metal.

Their 2010 album made me backtrack and get the others. Great for a sunny day.

Possibly the best track on Motorpsycho's fantastic 2010 album.

This song made me cry many a time this summer. Brilliant.

Lazy boy ^

@downwarRABpiral...Nice thread idea. Not a bad list either.
This thread would be even better with a downloadable link for every comp.

A couple banRAB/tracks that defined my summer methinks-

Caribou - She's The One

Summer has always screamed to me baroque pop, and Caribou do a durned fine job at delivering that want in spades with a a bit of Animal Collectiveish flair so I don't feel like a complete doofus showing it to frienRAB who ask me what could possibly be making me smile when I'm interning in a real estate office.

Moon Safari - In The Countryside

What would my summer have been without these guys to cheer me up? I've made it no secret that I consider Moon Safari to be not only the best of the modern progressive rock banRAB, but also the best damn band of the last 15 years period. 5-part vocal harmonies of Beach Boys class coupled with a near epidemic sense of wonder and enthusiasm makes anything of theirs sheer joy to listen to. Hence, if there was ever an outfit that was the erabodiment of summer in the whole of its' various associations and sentiments, its these proggy pop perfectionists.

MGMT - It's Working

Typically enough, I find MGMT a lot more interesting when they pretend to be The Zorabies instead of whatever it was their debut was pointing to, AKA generic Indie pap that pimply 14 year olRAB flock to like flies to rotting meat. Oddly enough, this album did wonders at some of the parties I attended during my free time over the last few months, including landing me two dates. Hooray for pretending to give a shit about what my generation likes!

In other news, Congratulations is fine psych-indie-pop record, and a summer milestone for me for better...and best.

Here's my list and a little bit too much info about me. The format's a little different as I'm listing albums (with the exception of the last), but mentioning my favorite tracks from said albums. I've spent way too much time compiling this and I'm sure no one will read to the whole thing or listen to the songs.

Com TruiseCyanide Sisters EP
This sun-drenched synth funk EP has really been a breath of fresh air in my electronic listening. The synth waves and bass are amazing. Many have been referring to it as chill-wave, but I don’t know enough about that genre to comment, really. Other than to me it just sounRAB like synth-funk influenced by BoarRAB of Canada and other IDM acts. Somebody’s always gotta make up new genre names any time something sounRAB ever so slightly different. My favorite track is probably BASF Ace but there’s no video for it.

Another song: Slow Peels

The Idle RaceThe Birthday Party
A great little psychedelic pop/rock album from 1968. It clocks in at just over 30 minutes and leaves you wanting more. Fans of The Kinks and early Beatles should surely enjoy this. Not all the songs are this upbeat but it has a great vibe throughout.

PhoenixWolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Early in the summer, I found myself pretty happy and wanted to maintain that mood by listening to more upbeat music than my usual mix of post-hardcore, punk and antisocial electronic music. I’d known about this album since last year, and avoided the hype as it wasn’t really in my realm anyway. Somehow I ended up picked it up, and found it immensely enjoyable. It’s just great on a sunny day when you’re in an upbeat mood. I ended up on a quest to find equally uplifting albums. I started to date a girl and sort of got infatuated with her and so when the sun was shining I was REALLY happy. Too bad that ended in an inexplicable way. But that's life.

Band of HorsesInfinite Arms
Not all the stuff I listened to this summer was upbeat in nature, some was quite introspective, as is the case with this album. I really enjoyed the band’s last two albums but was a bit weary of this one after hearing the first single, Compliments. However, I quickly fell in love with nearly the entire album and have played it a lot. This song is my favorite. Strangely enough I quite dislike country but enjoy a fair share of country-tinged indie rock. Factory is another favorite on the album.

Another song: Factory

The Black KeysBrothers
Released on the same day as Band of Horses’ album this year, I’ve also really enjoyed this album. It’s packed full of gold, really, with a full range of emotions and only a couple of mediocre songs. My favorite being this one, which makes me think of my relationship with my ex. I also really love Too Afraid To Love You (I think I was), Never Gonna Give You Up (haha but I did), These Days.

Another song: Never Gonna Give You Up

Jamie LidellCompass
I was hesitant about this album, given the fact that I haven’t liked that much of Jamie Lidell’s solo work. His debut was a pretty great experimental electronic album, but the soul stuff he put out on Multiply wasn’t really to my taste, and I heard his last album Jim was even more white-boy soul, so I never listened to it. However I know he’s a very talented producer with a great voice, having been part of Super_Collider which was amazing. After hearing the first single, The Ring, I decided I needed to get it as it reminded me of a more pop Super_Collider. My favorite songs on the album are actually Coma Chameleon and Gypsy Blood, though. The whole thing is quite varied with only one song that I find a little too fake-soul for my taste.

Another song: Coma Chameleon

The SmithsHatful of Sorrow
I finally “got” The Smiths this summer. I’d known several of their songs before, and my ex was a big fan, but didn’t often subject me to the music. I never had anything against it, just never felt the need to listen. Well I had tried this compilation once before, maybe last year, then played it again one day while laying at the park alone on a weekend afternoon. Something clicked. I think it’s the fact that I can totally relate to many of Morrissey’s lyrics, and I had never bothered to actually listen before. So since then, I’ve familiarized myself with all of their releases, but this is the release that broke me. “I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice.” This is the kind of shit that makes me wish my ex didn’t spend 3+ years of our 4.5 year relationship completely absorbed in school. Fuck you, and fuck me too. Anyway, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before is also a favorite. I actually remeraber seeing this video on MTV quite a bit back in the day. Fantastic stuff.

Another song: Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before

The ThermalsNow We Can See
This is the album that made me a fan. I’d heard the previous one maybe one time before and liked it alright, but I don’t know maybe I connected with the lyrics of this one more. I found it rather upbeat also, fitting the mood I was searching for this summer. This song also reminRAB me of my ex relationship. It’s kind of a “getting over it” song, coming to terms and feeling comfortable with my decision.

YeasayerOdd Blood
I enjoyed their debut, though I felt it only had a few great songs and the rest were mediocre. I put off listening to their more recent effort partly for that reason I guess. But something told me it would do me good, perhaps providing me with some great summer tunes. Turns out, I really like the album. The first song that really did it for me was O.N.E. The 80s video kind of gave it a different feel though, so I hesitate to show it. The second one that really struck me, and has struck me even more than O.N.E., is Madder Red. I’ll avoid posting the official video for that too because it sucks and distracts from the song. But goddamn do I love this song. Lyrics like “I turn away just when you want me, I know that home is where you want me” kind of describe the situation with my ex a little bit, I was pushed away and distanced because of her studies, but when she did make time I withdrew. And then the climax of the song for me (starting at 2:18), “Never gave a thought to an honorable living, always had sense enough to lie. It’s getting hard to keep pretending, I’m worth your time.” Goddamn. Beautiful.

O.N.E.

sElf - "Could You Love Me Now?"
A new single by sElf, who hasn’t released a proper album since 2005 and that was just a collection of leftover or reworked songs from an album that was never released due to record label fuck-ups. Anyway, it’s quite pop and a bit cheesy, but I’ve grown to really like it. I’m a big sappy pussy.

Violens - "Acid Reign"
First single from the long-awaited album by this band comprised of merabers from the underappreciated Lansing-Dreiden. I like the song but not as much as some of the songs from their debut EP. Really anticipating the album later this month, so I've played the song a lot.

Basically this summer I learned to stop taking music so seriously and that I better take notice of what puts me in a good mood and what doesn’t before I ruin the rest of my life.

The albums that I listened to over the summer? I think this list chocks up most of it.
Eminem- Recovery
Buckethead-Shadows Between the Sky
Jeff Beck- Emotion and Commotion
Elvis Presley- S/T
Metallica- Ride the Lightning

Much like Phoenix, MGMT is a much-hyped band I've known about since last year but never bothered to listen to. I've heard a few singles from their previous album, which I thought were ok, but that's it. I do have a feeling I could enjoy both of their albums if I actually gave them a chance, given my new less-serious fun/happy-seeking outlook on music. This particular song is not bad...though I had to search for a different video as that one is pretty shit quality. :p:

I'll have to check out the other stuff posted in this thread so far...just felt like commenting on yours since your post appeared after I compiled and submitted mine.

I know wat'cha mean brother. MGMT, like a lot of lauded indie-related music for me, are very hit and miss. Congratulations just happened to be more of the former than the latter for once, and it was a nice surprise.

You've got one hell of a nice selection on your post though. Lots of golden artists...including a few I need to check out....
