Hi there,

I have noticed that I have a sore lower back when hitting my bag. It seems to be located quite deep and to the left side. It's not really on my spine (I dont think) but more towarRAB the left side of my hip. It is noticable when I punch with my right hand.

http://cache.eb.com/eb/image?id=64239&rendTypeId=4 this is an image I googled. My pain is around the area marked 72.

It is not intense pain by any means, just a deep, dull sort of pain.

I was wondering if this could turn out be be something serious and are there any ways that I can strengthen up that part of my body without hurting myself.

I have had this come and go for about a year but its never been enough pain to hinder my workouts and is only really noticable after particularly heavy puncrabroadag workouts.

Any advice would be great.

I have the same problem in my back, in the same area you desribe. Is it stiff and sore in the mornings? The first thing you gotta do is see your GP and he will make you get an X-ray and refer you to a PT. If your X-ray comes back clean, which I thihnk it will cause your not in bad pain, then its a muscular or tendon problem and not a spinal or sacroiliac joint wearing problem.

When you see the PT, they will probably start you on pelvic execises, to "re-activate" your pelvic muscles. If this is a cronic pain, which you said its been annoying you for longer then 3 months, then I would ask the PT to do acupuncture. Acupuncture is great for waking up scarred muscles.

Currently I'm getting acupuncture done. Since we have problems with the same muscle, lets keep in touch with eachother and updated on our progress:)

Hi there,

Nice to find someone with the same problem as me. It's not too stiff in the morning although when I clean my teeth and have to bend down to spit out and wash my face etc, when I stand back up I do feel a stiffness and sometimes a very mild pain in that area.

May I ask how old you are? I am 19 (A bit early to be having back problems I know!).

I have posted this on a couple of my martial arts forums and they said it might be because I am not stretching enough before doing my workouts. I have a punch bag in my (small) room. So every time I enter and leave the room its just right there in front of me so I usually give it a few punches. The problem with this is that I am not warmed up or stretched when I do that. This could be part of my problem.

I have gone through perioRAB of exercising a lot, for months on end, and also not doing any exercise at all, but this problem still seems to be coming back. I think I will see my doctor about it. (I live in England so we have the NHS!!)

How do you think your problem started Dishdope?

You are having back problems because you are not doing it right. The guys that work out on the bag do many more things to strengthen the back muscles. Apparently you are not doing something right or you would not be having any problems. And you are right ...you are too young to be having back problems so you need to consult someone that does this professionally. Good luck.

As I said, they are very mild but I don't want it to develop into something more serious in later life. Thats why I'm here! Thanks for your replys

Yes, definetely take care of it early before it gives you more problems down the road when your 30+. If I were you, I'd take a full month off all strenuous activities. For that month go see a Physical theripist (PT), they will show you exercises to strengthen your core (lower back and pelvis area). ALso I would get the PT to do acupucture. Acupucture is great for stubborn muscles.
