For many years now, I have suffered from occasional swelling of my right cheek. It starts with an itchy feeling within the cheek tissue. Also I get a swollen line on the inside of my cheek, from the salivary gland at the back, near the jaw joint, that runs to the inside corner near my mouth. When this line raises up, I know my cheek is starting to swell. I have learned that sorbates and sorbitol in products that i consume and use cause this swelling. If I get a large dose of sorbitol, my cheek can remain swollen for 3 days. No antihistamines seem to help. Lately, if I mess up and consume sorbates/sorbitol, I get a bad headache along with the swelling. Does anyone else out there have this strange sensitivity to sorbates? They are hard to avoid since they are in many prepared fooRAB and dental products, as well as in some medications. This latest episode of swelling is from some sugar frosted cereal that I ate last night. I never thought that soribtol would be in cereal as well. Am I alone with this strange sensitivity?:(

It sounRAB like fructose malabsorption. (fructose, lactose, sorbitol)

Some people can't tolerate any of the three, some are only sensitive to one or two. I avoid sorbitol as it tenRAB to give me headaches.

There's also a Fructose Intolerance, a rare (1 in 10,000) hereditary disorder that's apparent since infancy. Fructose malabsorption is common (1 in 3), can be mild or severe, and can start at any age.

If you have any fever or pain with the swelling you might want to get checked out for Salivary Duct Stones. Sugars like sorbitol can stimulate saliva production which can really aggravate things if the saliva duct is blocked by a stone.

I, too have been battling a swollen salivary gland for 8 years. I've posted on Health BoarRAB a few times. I've had MRI's, Saliagram, CT's & nothing has been found to cause this. I was checked for allergies & that came back with an allergy to mushrooms, but I'm starting to think I have a sugar substitute allergy. I have stopped drinking anything with sugar substitutes like Diet Coke, etc. The last time I drank a Diet cola, my face blew up. I have a feeling that it never goes competely down because of the sorbitol in toothpaste that I use every day. I talked to the dentist yesterday about this. He agreed & gave me a sample of "Tom's" toothpaste. I am going to start using it & see if this helps.

Look out specifically for sorbates/sorbitol/potassium sorbate. They are the ones that puff me right up! Colgate toothpaste is OK for me to use. Most of those whitening mouth rinses are bad for me.....the list of "bad" stuff is endless. I am glad I am not alone with this!
