Sora Kake Girl - I expected something terrible and I got something enjoyable.

Currently running in Japan is an science fiction anime known as "Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo" (The Girl Who Leapt Through Space) or simply "Sora Kake Girl". Don't let the name fool you, it has absolutely nothing to do with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Nothing about the show screamed potential to me before watching. It's from the same team who were behind Mai-HiME and Mai-Otome, who haven't proven themselves to be consistent about the quality of their work. The promotional material focused on objectifying the girls. Yet in spite of all this, 4 episodes in and we have a fairly enjoyable gag show that also appears to have a dark underlying plot. The main character Akiha is basically the straight man in a world full of weirdos. Leopard's personality is basically an awesome lampoon of Lelouch from Code Geass. Imo-chan has some great quirks like her mania for classical vehicles and her amusingly quick temper.

I'm just wondering, is anyone else here watching this show besides me?

No, don't tell anyone!

This is suppose to be a secret, we can't tell the public about this gem! There is a REASON Sunrise gave the show a crappy advertising effort you know? Nobody must know!

Wow, not just lampoon but actually use Lelouch's VA, too!

And Btw, Leapord (Lelouch lampoon) is a giant, floating robot diamond.

Yea Leopard is Lelouch's VA, Jun Fukuyama. As soon as I heard Leopard talk I started laughing uncontrollaby and had to pause the show. Although the problem I've had in continuing the series is I'm waiting so much for the appearances of Leopard that I kind of get bored with the show around it. If that makes any sense.

Although this role definitely cements that if The World God Only Knows ever gets an anime adaption that Jun Fukuyama ABSOLUTELY MUST voice the role of Keima because he looks like a little crazier smaller version of Lelouch, but he's such a wacky otaku that the Leopard voice would suit him.

I tried watching three episodes of this, I couldn't take it anymore, and I was suckered in thanks to the Lelouch lampoon , and even he didn't save the show for me.

(I'm a sucker for parody, that and Megumi Hayashibara, but she's not in this show)

And the fact that it was produced by the My-HiME staff and SUNRISE in general, was another reason I was suckered in, but honestly can't stand this show. (or Akiha for that matter)

It is pretty much lampooning the fact Fukuyama was Lelouch's VA, yes, which does a lot to make Leopard pretty hilarious.

Though that's more about Lelouch the voice rather than Lelouch the character, if you get the idea, although the difference may not seem that clear unless you really think about it. Not much of an issue though, but hey...just saying.

That actually describes my own attitude towarRAB the show as well, so it probably does. All the humor and anime references aside, which aren't limited to just the above since there are others, I'll have to admit to not being that much interested in most of the actual content at the moment. Which may or may not change later on.

Well I knew nothing of this show before it started airing; my reactions as I watched:

Ep. 1: 'Is this a Shojo show or one of those Moe type things?'
Ep. 2: 'Ya, it's probably Moe... and are that police woman and Under-sized Lelouch... I'm probably just looking too much into those scenes.'
Ep. 3: 'It's Moe.'
Ep. 4: 'It's definitely Moe.'

Yeah.

It's not a spiritual successor to My-HiME if it doesn't have a Minami Kuribayashi OP.

Wow...just wow!

Bumping this thread to explain to all just exactly what you're missing by not watching this incredible gem from Sunrise.

I'll admit it, this wasn't pulling me in at first. Actually it wasn't pulling me in for about a good 5 episodes but there was something there that kept me watching it. (coughcoughLeopardcoughcough). I never thought that I'd see something that corabined moe, mecha, psychic powers, talking space colonies, crossdressers, epic space battles, parody, humor and the best Gunbuster reference I've ever seen in the last episode and turn it into quality anime. (Then again, given how random all those aspects are could you blame me? )

This show pulled a lot out of it's butt and I didn't understand a lot of what was going on at times (though it does all pull together nicely as the show goes on) but something tells me that this was supposed to be one of those "turn your brain off" type shows. I mean, I don't think it was but it sure felt that way to me. BTW, could any other company that isn't Sunrise turn fighting between sentient colonies awesome? No, I didn't think so.

Once again, I need to stress how very much this show is pulled by Lelo...I mean, Leopard. I honestly would have probably dropped it if it wasn't for him being there (which is good because I never would have seen such a great show otherwise). I don't know who was the genius who thought turning a sentient brain colony into a flawless near-parody of Lelouch was a good idea but that guy neeRAB some type of award because Leopard and his antics are just the very thing that drive the show. I loved figuring out what the Golden Orb was supposed to be.

As for the humans, they were okay. I didn't hate any of them for the wrong reasons (I mean, I disliked Nami but I'm sure you were supposed to given how she was acting like a total *expletive*). Akiha annoyed a lot of people I heard but Imo was a little more annoying to me. I did like her Yandere mode whenever Leopard called her a baked potato. Itsuki was love. (Seriously, what kind of books was she studying to become a normal student? Did she like accidentally walk into the shoujo-ai section at the bookstore?) Being the only relatively down-to-earth one of the group she was a pretty cool character. Plus UL was awesome. Honoka was alright. I don't have anything really to say about her other than that I laughed out loud when she knocked out and dragged that cross-dressing professor.

As for the mecha, they were kind of just there. Not like that's bad or anything. I mean, it's not like the show is called Sora Kake QT-ARMS. I really liked the upgraded models though I wish they had shown up sooner than the third-to-last episode (When I saw that Itsuki's transformed into a police car, I was like "THAT IS SO FREAKING COOL!")

One thing that somewhat annoyed me was that there was no clear villain. There was Nami but she was just a total hardass. And Nerval began to see the error of his ways by the end (speaking of which "You must shoot me...my son!" (Leopard readies his Cannon) "WITH PLEASURE!" (Nerval and evil Leopard freak out) That was so hilarious). I guess the "other" Leopard was the true villain in the end anyway.

Anyway, check this out if only for Fukuyama's Leopard. You'll be confused for a while and honestly, I think that's half of what kept me watching. Confusion and the kickass mecha fights as well as Leopard. You won't be dissapointed

(BTW, about Xanthippe. Pink colony who loves to sing...and is voiced by Rie Tanaka..I really wish I had gotten the parody quicker)

Well considering it was a show about a bunch of teenage girls flying around space in latex swim-wear: yes, "turn your brain off" type shows

Leopard will go down as literally the biggest dick joke ever.

For the most part I felt Akiha was just kinda there most of the series despite being the main character. I actually liked Imo.

Actually in a DVD extra (Picture Drama #2) I found on YouTube it turns out Nina sent her a "situation examples" manual before going undercover was in fact a shoujo-ai manga. I can't post it here because it lacked the towels the series had but Itsuki did make a fantastic Hatsune Miku cosplayer.

Over all: a perfectly enjoyable show.

Ah, classic Sunrise I see.

Now, you see what you did there? Now, I have bad images in my head.
That explains everything.

I love how she just acts completely serious and pratically screams out "WE MUST BE FRIENRAB!"
