Hey, I noticed a few ringtone topics around here but in a hurry right now so sorry if this was already asked... I have Sony Ericsson w580i and an .mp3 file I really want to use as my ringtone, but I think this phone only let's yes you use ringtones you download or something... The file is really small so that's not the problem, and it won't let me use any imported files, just ones I pay for. Is there anyway I can get around this and use the file as my ringtone?

Thanks!

Sounds like you're up against DRM protection. Just to explain briefly, DRM is used by certain phone carriers to ensure that you pay for any content you use on your phone. The phone is set to accept certain files and only if they are encrypted with DRM will they work. It's harsh I know and I can't think of anyone who likes the idea of DRM encoding. However, there are 2 possible solutions to this:

1) Upload the tone to your PC and encrypt it with DRM using some software (google is your best friend here).

2) Have your phone de-branded. This isn't simple, and will cost. There are a few topics on this forum already that deal with de-branding.

I would reccomend option one though :) .

I'm fairly sure that this isn't just the case for my phone, so I'll add a way to use mp3s as ringtones.

Convert the mp3 to mono.

I've been doing this since the day I got my phone out of the box. I use my DAW, but you can find an audio editor on download.com.
