Sonwhats our attraction to bumps, intro's, outro's ect....

So what do you think it is about bumps, wraparounds, intro's and outro's that make us go nutty?

What bump did it for you?

For me it was the ABC "After these messages....we'll be right back!" bumps from the late 80's to early 90's. The dog & hydrant, cowboy and the three dancers, classic!

If a show is part of a block and has a great intro/outro with cool bumps then it kind of makes me feel like I am part of something and what I am watching is special and uniqe and not just another show on tv. To me, bumps bring identity to shows and to blocks and some even become classic.

Anyone?

Not sure how or why I got into them, but I have been as long as I can remember. Cartoon Network's checkerboard bumpers where probably the first I took active notice of how cool they were put together (rough guess says I was about 8 around then). Also always liked the Fox Kids bumpers that essentially had a camera running through a tunnel themed by the show it was advertising, during the "Take the Ride" slogan era. Even at a young age, I'd be just as excited to see what Fox Kids and Kids' WB!'s bumpers and promos would look like each season as I was to see the new shows themselves. Even spent time doodling my own designs and layouts for title cards and whatnot. I suppose it's a really odd thing to have been into as a kid, but then it could've been worse.

Those ABC ones you mentioned were the best ever, with the fire hydrant, cowboy, and singers.

Another set I really loved, though mostly forgotten, was the CBS set from 1993-1994. There were thirteen pairs of bumps: nine in 1993, then four more added in January 1994. I loved them, but most people don't remember them. Hmm... how to awkwardly describe them....

1: Pigs jump through a hoop, with the last pig getting stuck. A red curtain falls over the stage, along with a golden eye hanging down with it.

2: An alligator snaps at a bird, who then lays an "eye" egg, I guess.

3: A dalmation falls into a swirly void, which turns into a white and black-spotted eye.

4: Two aliens in a spaceship look at a video monitor of a distant planet. A close-up view shows the planet as the eye. In the "we're back" part, there was a third alien, and the planet crashes into the ship.

5: A bunch of electric guitars rock out, with an eye on one of them.

6: A classic school bell rings on a black-and-white background, with lots of school stuff being thrown at it. One, an apple I think, hits it, and the bell falls down, revealing an eye behind it.

7: A pizza delivery guy carelessly runs into a screen door, splattering the pizza, shaped like the eye, onto the door.

8: A pizza is rolled out and made, and topped to look like the eye.

9: Similar to #8, with a tinnier version of #8's music, a very loaded pizza has slices cut out to shape it like the eye. I preferred this one to #8.

10: Near a closed sewer grate, a dog sniffs a hot dog. Then a worker comes from under the grate and flattens the dog: the underside of the grate has the eye.

11: A smaller dinosaur provokes a larger dinosaur, who runs after it, and makes a footprint in the shape of the eye.

12: A caveman chisels the eye.

13: Two sumo wrestlers fight. When one bounces the other away, an eye appears on his belly.
