I'm just reading this poem by Carol Ann Duffy, it's called 'You' - it's 14 lines - does this make it a sonnet? It doesn't rhyme and doesn't have the rhyming couplet at the end? It's divided into a quartrain, an octave and a couplet.
A sonnet needs a rhyming couplet at the end of the poem, regardless of rhyming throughout. The last two lines. It may be a hybrid of a sonnet and may give extra meaning to her poem if she has chosen not to include it - maybe the character in it is lonely? Individual?
This tends to be the reason why poets defer from fundamental poem structures.

Hi there.
Yes, a classic sonnet has to rhyme - the schemes vary, but every line will be a rhyme.
Carol Anne was having a play around. modern poets do that.
Cheers, Steve.
