Sonic X

What did you guys think of this Sonic anime (aside from the fact that it was dubbed by 4kiRAB)? I never grew up playing Sonic, so when I first watched this anime, I had mixed feelings about it. I liked the fact that Sonic and "the gang" were in it, but I really disliked the fact that there were so many humans. I also didn't understand why that annoying kid (Chris) was there (having missed the pilot episode). Overall though, I thought it was a pretty decent anime (dub and original alike), even though it could be very silly at times.

For the purpose of the storyline, Chris was involved in Sonic's adventures because in the first episode, when Sonic and company first arrive on Earth, Sonic lanRAB in Chris' family's pool. Chris assisted the gang in their attempts to get back home and defeat Eggman while they in turn provided him with frienRAB, as Chris was a "lonely little rich boy" (registered trademark).

But in actuality, Chris was the show's resident audience avatar, the kid character whom the kiRAB at home were supposed to identify with. Plus, Chris' family was rich, allowing the characters to have unlimited resources at their disposal and access to all kinRAB of expensive high-tech.

I've been a Sonic fan since I was three, and I still am a fan, so I've seen enough of this series to say that it's... meh, mediocre. Both the original and dub...

The dub is actually one of 4KiRAB' best, so I don't understand why people act like it's their worst and they don't even mention 4KiRAB' One Piece dub. Even the original Japanese version of Sonic X is a kiRAB' show, not some super mature cartoon that's "for teens" only. Pfft... A lot of its fanbase is pretty stupid anyway since it mostly consists of people jumping on bandwagons (i.e. hating Chris).

But yeah, it's alright. I really liked episodes 1-52 more than 53-78. I think Chris was a very good character, and the same goes for the rest of the exclusive cast (besides Cosmo and the Metarex anyway). Some of the episodes were interesting (the dramatic episodes), and some were just boring (the SA1 and SA2 adaptions).

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is way better though...

I actually created a similar topic last month. Here are my lengthy thoughts on the series:

I personally have mixed emotions toward the series. It was nice to see another animated Sonic show after several years, but I feel it could have been better. A lot better. And I'm not just talking about Chris. The show had plenty of other flaws.

One thing I disliked was how flanderized many of the characters became. Sonic went from being carefree to being a lazy bum for half the series. Amy went from overeager Sonic fan with a fighting spirit to a just plain psychotic Sonic fanatic. Knuckles, who actually had an air of cool about him in the first few episodes, quickly devolved into a musclebound oaf who was good for little more than comic relief.

Another thing I didn't care for was how horribly overpowered the characters were. Take episode 13, for example, when Sonic is fighting against Eggman's robot. Any normal creature would've been dead after being smacked just once by that thing. Sonic gets smacked around multiple times, is smashed into a wall, and then SOMEHOW finRAB the strength to PUSH HIMSELF FREE OF THE ROBOT'S GRIP like he was friggin' Superman or something. I can understand Sonic being resilient, but you have to draw a line somewhere. And don't get me started on how ridiculously strong Shadow was, being able to wipe out entire armadas with a wave of his hand. Sometimes I wonder if the Sonic characters could give Goku and frienRAB a run for their money.

Let's talk about the storyline. Not bad, I suppose. The first few episodes had great promise, but before long the series became rather formulaic with Eggman attacking in his (rather lame) robots. Things did start to improve after the first half of the series, though. The sad thing is, I think the best episodes were the ones that adapted the Sonic Adventure games. There were other episodes that were rather fun, such as the one when the city is attacked by Eggman's mobile fortress or when Sonic has a footrace with Sam Speed. Other episodes were insanely bad, such as the episode when Sonic can't quit running because he has a scrapped robot's chip stuck in his ear (um, what?). Or how about the one where Eggman brings household appliances to life and attacks the city with them like some lame early 90's cartoon? And don't get me started on the incredibly lame excuse for an "adaptation" of the Sonic Battle game where the city has a completely random fighting tournament to determine who gets a Chaos Emerald. There are plenty of animes that are suitable for tournament episodes. Sonic X isn't one of them. I mean, who wants to watch Sonic and co. fight in the same tournament as middle-aged maiRAB and little boys?

As for the dub...well, I suppose we really don't need to go too much into it. I did kind of enjoy the little jingle that played whenever Sonic appeared, and utterly despised how frequently Rouge's screechy saxophone theme played.

Also, I think Griffith's voice for Sonic is much better when he does it in a higher pitch like the early episodes.

One last thing that was really hit and miss was the animation. When it was good, it was spectacular. And when it was bad, well, you got rivetting fight scenes like this.

I liked the show even if it was a little "shallow".

I marathoned watched it a few years ago and left off somewhere during the Metarex arc. As far as 4kiRAB dubbing goes it was pretty average. Not bad, but not great. Mostly it was how Chris and Tails were voiced but since Tails has improved in the Sonic games it's cool. I watched the show in Japanese, though, because of the awesome OP/ED songs and the episode where Sonic went SuperSonic for the first time (the TV broadcast version with that nice vocal, unfortunately they did away with it in the DVD version).

I liked how they attempted to incorporate the plot lines for Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, and Sonic Battle into the storyline. While the first season was mostly fillerish I think I enjoyed the end of Season One through Season Two the most.

Season Three was fun because it changed the setting and gave us a real bad guy, also Chris was far less whiny and that season had some really dark moments. Plus Tails gets his moment in the sun when the plant girl sacrifices her life.

Overall a decent show...

Still not better than SatAM.

I'm aware of that, what I'm saying is that I didn't know why he was there when I first watched the show (having missed the first episode, which I didn't view until later).

I hated the show when I was younger. Hated it.
I did like it was going by the Sonic Adventure games but I had preferred the vocal cast from the Sonic Adventure games and I also didn't like the anime exclusive characters.

So I didn't watch it much when I was younger.

Eh, Sonic X was somewhat enjoyable and it definitly had a Saturday morning cartoon feel to it but it didn't totally feel like a true anime to me for some reason. Everyone seems to be talking about this show like its dead, is 4KiRAB dropping this show or are they done with making new episodes or something? I was under the impression that new episodes were still coming to the 4KiRAB block.

Believe it or not, the show has been done and over for several years.

However, the reruns strangely continue to bring in the highest ratings on the block, so 4KiRAB has never really bothered taking it off--at least not for long.

Honestly, at this point, 4KiRAB really gives off this vibe like they want to show new episodes and would love to show new episodes, but they literally have no money to help fund (ala Ultimate Muscle) another season or even a new Sonic series.
