Something i've always wondered about football....?

Towards the end of the game, when the players are trying to get out of bounds to save time.... They are often fighting to get out and I've always wondered why they didnt just lateral the ball out of bounds. Because if you fumble out of bounds you get the ball back where it went out, and a un-caught lateral is the same as a fumble, right? This is probably a really dumb question, sorry if it is.....
 
That is a great question. Never thought of that. Guess the guy above me who cited the rule answered it. I never knew that rule existed, but it makes sense.
 
Rule 7, Section 2, Article 1 of the NFL says "A runner may hand or pass the ball backward at any time, except to throw the ball intentionally out of bounds to conserve time." 5 yard penalty, loss of down and the clock starts on ready for play.
