Someone who has read the southern vampire books and watch true blood to answer.?

I am just starting to read the books. I have just finish the first and am excitied about reading the next one. But I also found out about the series true blood which is more of a show. My questions is, is the show right from the books themselves? So I should read the books before i watch the show or not? I just want to read before seeing it on tv. So which books go to what show? You know what I mean!
 
I watch True Blood (the first season was awsome) and I just purchased the first book in the series. I was told that the first season of the shown takes events and characters fromt the first two books. Check out the TV show's Wikipedia page...it explains a lot there.
