...does that mean? A back bike rider told me at a truck stop that Harley's distinct muffler sound is a registered sound with the big wigs. She was blonde and darn proud her man rides Harley and not another. I have gone past Milwaukee's Harley Davidson place there many times. I hear quiet Harley s all the time .. Do deaf people ride Harley s? Anyway I guess it is serious to riders for a reason. How do you folks take the distinctive Harley motor sound?. .. lol
 
They did attempt to patent their sound but I'm pretty sure that was denied. (It was a trademark, and they changed their minds).

Harleys are not particularly obnoxious when left stock. It's the aftermarket mufflers that cause all the horrendous noise. And that can happen with ANY type of motorcycle.

I don't think their sound is particularly distinctive, actually. 8 times out of 10 if you hear a super loud bike it's a Harley. But there are plenty of other bikes with aftermarket mufflers that to me sound the same. I can't hear the difference between a Shadow and whatever models Harley makes.
