Someone says, “Learning a foreign language/culture will impair the learning

of one’s mother tongue and culture? What do you think?
 
From my experience, that is partially true with young children. First they learn their native language, then due to parents, they pick up language #2. Usually, their writing skills are a little behind in 1st and 2nd grade. By the time they hit 4th and 5th grade, their writing and grammar skills shoot way ahead of their peers. Usually, again from my experience, that only appears true with Kindergartners and 1st graders.
 
I disagree, I used to suck at grammar and basically anything that had to to with English (my mother tongue) Now I speak Spanish fluently and am studying French, German, and Russian and now I seem better at English than ever, it just makes so much more sense to me after learning about other languages into depth.
 
Thats not true... I perfected my native language by learning English and French.
 
I really don't think so.
I'm fluent in Spanish and English. My parents are both Mexican so Spanish was my first lang. Followed by English.
I've been taking french now for almost 5 years and I can honestly say that by taking french and learning french grammar I've become better at learning Spanish grammar. Same with German and English. I've been studying German culture and language for 3 years and no matter which language you're learning its always going to be compared to English. By having it compared it makes you want to pay more attention to your own grammar.
 
Not true. I have 2 sons who were born in England, learned English there, came to live in Thailand when one was 2 and the other was 8, learned Thai language and culture here but still speak English like English people.

The older one is now 18, lives in England again, and is bilingual. He can pass for English in England and Thai in Thailand.

In England there are huge Indian and Chinese communities. Their children speak and learn in English at school then speak their parents mother tongue and live according to the parents culture at home blending into both equally well.
 
Thats shit, learning about other cultures and languages helps you understand your own better....before I learned german I didn't know crap about grammar...and now Im pretty good at it
