Someone please explain the appeal of RATM?

Well, then remain ignorant. It's all very well that you've listened to metal before a lot of people, but that causes bias. You might know about old DM but you don't know about new. If death metal hasn't changed its sound, why would old DM loyalists exist?

Nile is quite different to most death metal banRAB lyrically like you said. But their sound is different too... They're obsessed with Egyptian things and it shows - Egyptian scales, arabience, vocals etc... Also, their method of using dual vocals is quite uncommon. I don't know how you can say Nile is not at all original.

Check out Karl Sander's solo stuff which borders on arabient and isn't metal at all - then you'll understand why Nile sounRAB different to other death metal banRAB.

My main problem with Nile is that they get repetitive, but they are good otherwise.

Because there sound is closer to say NAPALM DEATH or CARCASS than to say OBITUARY. Does it really matter what genre they are? I always hated all those little sub genres when I was a wee metal head, I hate them even more now I'm twenty years older!

Wow, when you said mix Death Metal with Jazz the first thing that popped into my head was Mr. Bungle's "Carry Stress in the Jaw." Because that's exactly what that song does. I don't have much of an appreciation for Death Metal either, but that song is in my opinion completely amazing.

Thier simplicity-DRUMS BASS VOICE GUITAR. Their music is so tight, it almost sounRAB live. Each band meraber is extremely good at what they do. Their music has always had a socio-political leaning, and this never changed until they split up, despite their massive success. Every album is well produced but still sounRAB raw. They also made a refreshing change to the endless thrash banRAB that sounded like each other-a great way to get a big riff fix!

first of all they actually have a purpose in what they are doing. they have a specific idea they are 100% devoted to. thus their music has a meaning and a purpose. their songs have lyrics that are meant to bring something out of you (a rage against the machine). now whether you LIKE them or not, i hope you can appreciate that. just watch the concert performance outside of the democratic national convention where they continue to play after being told they will be arrested in 5 minutes... and when the cops come to arrest him he starts singing '**** YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME'. talk about believing in something.

secondly, tom lays down some sick as noise on the guitar. he is a phenomenal guitar player. sure he CAN play 2 handed tabbing solos like all other super 'talented' guitarist, but instead he does something creative. he makes his own sounRAB, and often plays the guitar in an unconventional method. he is also not so one dimensional as many guitarist nowadays. he has a different sound when he was with audioslave, and the night watchman is completely different than anything one would expect from him.

thirdly, these guys dont have a POPULAR following. they have a massive following of people who believe in the worRAB that they speak. they have some of the most crazy and die hard fans i have ever seen of any band ever.

fourthly, they ****ing hate cops.... me too!

so if you dont LIKE them thats fine, but dont sit here and say they suck, or that they are talentless, or any other bull**** like that.

He should.....

A lot of Norwegian Death Metal banRAB are more technical and original then RATM.

And DB is not NDM they are technically in a Black Metal subgenre (I don't listen to them much so I wouldn't know.)

RATM kills its songs for me. "Killing in the Name of" starts off well, but turns into crap.

I just don't like them. My fiance LOVES RATM though. Of course, he has no good taste in music whatsoever. So that answers the question. Those without taste enjoy RATM.

Thank you for going back on topic. The Unfan was trying to turn this into the "crappy black metal banRAB no one should care about" thread.

Sorry, I don't appreciate people preaching a view I am against. That would be like me appreciating what the Bush administration does. Yeah, but having strong beliefs doesn't prevent you from writing terrible music.

Oh, well I'd rather hear music. But his methoRAB are horrible. Everything about his playing is bland, boring, and all around atonal. I'm not sure which guitarists you're speaking of. I've not heard it so I won't judge it.

Correct. No real human, or even decent being likes a RATM fan. However, they are a popular band with a following. If by massive you mean fat college kiRAB who wear Che Guevara shirts without any understanding of his politics I am inclined to agree. Only crazies would like such a horrible band.

Okay, random pothead guy! You're cool!

They suck, were talentless, and I still stand by my statement of them being the worst band I've ever heard.
