Some Possible Helps for Acid Reflux

I know a lot of people use licorice root and it seems to help. It comes in a liquid, I believe. shouldnt' be too hard to get. I am unable to take it because of interstitial cystitis/chronic inflammation of urinary tract. Everything I eat or drink can make me feel like I have a nasty bladder infection, so I am limited. One thing that sometimes helps me is nordic naturals jr. 3-6-9. It is liquid fish oil for kiRAB. Sometimes ultra omegas by country life help; be careful, if your reflux is bad, puncture the gel cap and squirt it out into water rather than swallowing it Could be painful to get down even though it's not that big. I've had reflux flare for hours just from swallowing something like that when my chest is tight. The omega does not taste great but I am used to it. The nordic is lemon flavored; I thought the citrus would bother my stomach but it hasn't. Maybe try small amounts at first and see how your stomach takes it.
I know there are other natural healers but I'm not sure what they are; I will let you know if I find out
I am fortunate not to have had as much of the mucous, but when my reflux is bad, I literally get a full blown head cold. It irritates my throat and mucous merabranes and I get very congested, nasal drip, the works. sheesh

Even after my Nissen Fundoplication, my GI doc still has me on Prevacid 2x/day and an anti-reflux diet. His list of things to avoid: fatty, greasy or fried fooRAB; spicy fooRAB like onions, peppers, tomato based products; caffeine drinks like coffee, tea, colas; citrus drinks; chocolate, alcohol and nicotine. Add that to the list with no raw fruits and veggies (escpecially lettuce) and no dairy because of the recently diagnosed IBS and it really makes eating well difficult.

I also forgot to mention that a good friend of mine had reflux come on quite suddenly in the summer and had to take medication. SHe then heard from someone that acidophilus (the good bacteria--you can get it in capsules) can help--she started taking it and felt better within days. She is now off the medication but still taking the acidophilus. It's also good in general for immunity and a healthy digestive system. You can get it at a health food store but get a good brand and keep it in the fridge. A lot of the yoghurts out there now boast containing this, and they do, but i have heard that you need to eat a ton of it to get the same benefit as two capsules per day. Plus, the dairy can bother some people as well.

I keep hearing over and over that the organic apple cidar vinegar works super for acid reflux. Is anyone else finding that it really does? Has anyone been able to go off meRAB and just drink that? Just wanting to hear a success story! There is one! Lets hear some more! Thanks!

What about the Probiotic tablets? It is an acidophelus little pill. I take one every day. Right now it seems nothing is helping me since the reflux is out of control tonight and the Zantac is giving me lots of side effects tonight.

Hi binkyholder,

Just a question. When are you getting these pains between your shoulder blades? Was it after you've been sitting in front of the computer for a few hours? Just check what preceded the incidents, because if the pain is intermittent like yours and massage helps then it usually is from bad posture, such as sitting in the wrong position in front of a computer. There is a lot of stress on the muscles between the shoulder blades especially in the case of women.

You could be sitting with one shoulder higher than the other due to the mouse position being too high, to mention just one possibility.

pROBIOTICS AND Acidophilus are really the same thing......Probiotics is the more general word whereas there can be many types of the good bacteria in them, e.g. acidophilus, bifidus, etc.

My doctors and I believe my reflux and gastritis is also related to chronic constipation. Most likely I have bile reflux which is triggered by IBS-C. So after failing to find any relief using the typical treatment protocol for gerRAB I directed my efforts toward treating IBS-C. I have finally made some progress and feeling much better. For me finding the right corabination of probiotics, magnesium and fiber supplements have made a huge difference.

I tried a lots of different probiotics but only one really made a noticeable difference its a product called "Goodbelly" that contains the probiotic strain Lp299v. You owe it to yourself to do a little research on Lp299v and try it if it's available in your area. I believe this product deserves most of the credit for the relief I'm currently experiencing.

I also tried a nuraber of different magnesium supplements but have had the best luck using Natural Calm right before bedtime. It helps with the sleep as well as with the "C". You'll have to gradually increase your dosage of magnesium until you find what's right for you. For me I can tolerate 1g dosages of magnesium citrate before I reach bowel tolerance. I know of others can only tolerate a 200mg single dosage.

As for the fiber supplements I've been happy with the benifiber it's easy for me to take and I've not had any problems with it.

Where can you get orange peel extract ?I am in Canada.
I have tried apple cider vinegar but there was no change. Also I tried prevacid, nexium but no relief and many others,I am trying ranitidine an old drug but helped a year ago.

I am looking forward to meeting with the doctor of friday. I will ask her to prescribe this to me. Besides I want something that doesn't have the artifical sweetners in it like the OTC meRAB. That's what is making me worse.
Thanks for the advice! :)

Hello Cheryl,
Thanks so much for the info--I would like to take care of my acid reflux the natural way also. I will have to try the just apricots. My liver specialist told me to get off all unnecessary medications. He said that they are so harmful and I really have known that for a long time because of all the horrible side effects they cause me. Have a good day. precious49 God Bless You and Yours Today and EveryDay

The sauce could very well have made your LPR go whacko but the alfredo will do a nuraber on you too. Some days just lettuce alone will choke me to death! It is "very" frustrating to first off try and follow the rules and diet but when you can get away with it one time and not the next is the worst. I have really keep a food journal for months and I still can't figure out any rhyme or reason why my LPR goes out of control. Sure, there are a few things that I do eat and know I will get symptoms of uncontrolable coughing and drowning in mucus. Usually, the good things! Then one the other hand, I can drink Coke all day long and feel great. Never has bothered me. The Starbucks is a different story and I'm addicted to the stuff. My Dr. say's to eat what I want and go from there as we are all different. Personally, I will suffer a little misery for chocolate! Good Luck.

Acid reflux or heartburn occurs when strong stomach acid leaks back up into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube which carries food from your mouth to your stomach. When you swallow, a circular band of muscle around the bottom part of the esophagus relaxes to allow food and liquid to enter into your stomach.

Normally this muscle valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is closed and keeps the digestive acid and food inside the stomach where it belongs.

However if the LES valve opens when it shouldn't, hydrochloric acid from the stomach can reflux back and touch the lining of the esophagus.

This can cause a burning sensation in the chest or throat known as acid reflux or heartburn.

Most people experience the occasional episode of heartburn and although unpleasant, it is generally nothing to worry about. Frequent or constant heartburn however can be a serious problem and is the most common symptom of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Ref: Mayo Clinic Staff, Oct 18, 2005.

Acetic acid in vinegar lowers stomach acidity (increases its pH) since acetic acid is a weaker acid than hydrochloric acid, and creates an alkaline

Do any of you feel like your chest muscles hurt or are tender? Is it my imagination or is that part of the reflux? I don't think I have really lifted weights lately.

Yes, I would love for you to give me some Apple Cidar Vinegar choices. This is the route I would like to go. Expecially since my reflux is fairly mild in comparison to others. It is getting better too. I would love your thoughts. Thanks!

Just a precaution--with anything you try--the natural stuff--please start out with a small amount and see how you respond. give yourself a good hour. I've had things increase my reflux right at first and then it tapers off, and I've had things improve my acid reflux right off and then it get worse in about an hour. You never know how something will affect your stomach, esp if you are not certain what is causing the reflux. Just a word to proceed carefully, I hope soemthing helps!!

If you are looking fora better tasting apple cider vinegar, I've tried Body Ami blenRAB (with fruit juice and organic honey) it's worth a try.

I took Protonix for a couple years. It didn't help when the reflux got bad. Of course the PPI's work differently for everyone.

I really like the Prevacid best. Took care of things completely for a while and is not the "best of the worst" for me since nothing completely works. I like the Solutabs 30 mg twice a day. It contains aspartame though. The Prevacid delayed-release capsules don't list it as ingredient though. Might be another one to consider.

My advice: Stay away from Nexium. Some swear by it, but it made me sick, sick, sick.

Hi T,
That is, indeed, strange. I went to see an ENT because of a constant, annoying, post nasal drip. When I told the ENT that I had this annoying mucous, she immediately said, "You most likely have esophageal reflux." I had never heard of it. She told me that esophageal reflux is one of the most common complaints she sees in her office. Apparently, esophageal reflux is not always accompanied by a 'heartburn' burning sensation. She said that the body produces the mucous to protect the esophagus from the acid.

If they can cure the reflux, the mucous will go away. She also told me that sometimes it takes a while to try various pills to rid the acid. She said that diet is also key. I do find a relation to what I eat. And I think coffee is the worst offender...damn!
I think I'll try Nexium next.

I understand about the heart thing as I frequently experience a more rapid heart beat with bowel movemetns. I thought I was crazy. Soemtimes I get chills and cold sweating. I have been on a probiotic program for six and a half years. I am still only able to tolerate very small amounts, and can't even do that on a regular basis. They give me a lot of heartburn. It is so vexing, it seems like everything gives me heartburn. so does magnesium. Just can't seem to get my bowels to move without all the spasms and heartburn. Unfortunatley, the reflux does not abate with the passing of stool. Soemtimes the more days in a row I go, the worse it gets, although this has gotten a little better over the years. Good grief, I feel like such a strange case!
I am so glad you are doing better, makes me wonder if I should keep up with the probiotics, but I am discouraged and tired of the reflux they cause. It isn't just them though, it's anything that makes my bowels move. a new doc wants to try me on miralax
I appreciate your input
