Last summer we had a cookout and there were dozens of soda cans left in the garbage. My school aged kids mentioned that they had been taught about recycling at school. I agreed that we could do our responsible part and collect the cans. After several months of collecting and numerous can crunching events, we had amassed about 20 large garbage bags ( approx. 100 cans in each). The scrap yard pays 35 cents per pound. It takes around 30 cans to make a pound. So, in essence, we got about a dollar per bag. The nearest recycler is 35 miles from our house so it took about $8 for gas and the kids each got a soda $2 which left about $10 for them to split. On the way home I asked if they felt good for doing their part for the environment. My ten year old daughter paused, looked at her five dollar bill and said " I'll give you 5 bucks if you won't make me stomp cans in the driveway anymore".
Thanks Geek.... she gets it from her mother.
