Some help for a newbie

Please excuse me if this is the wrong section for this post
I am going to receive a Google G1 in the mail soon, and this is going to be my first Android phone..

Any suggestions on apps/rooting things/make my phone look cool suggestions?
I'm fairly new to rooting, and I understand that it can be beneficial.
Some main questions I have are:
-Installing ROMS and rooting etc (what I need, tutorials, etc)
-Process of Updating Android to 2.1 or 2.2?
-App market, ect
