Some general questions about Meditation..?

I'm fairly new to it, but find the concept fascinating.
Just a few questions I hope you all can answer for me.

-When you meditate, do you try to clear your mind as you do when going to sleep at night, or let your thoughts wander?
Like, do you just relax, or reflect?

I've read that reaching deeper levels of meditative states involves slowing down brain function and synchronizing one's breathing, and to do this, you think about nothing?

What do you guys think?
