Some class video ideas for 8 and 9 year-olds?

Hi

I'm on a teaching practice and as part of a "Persuasive Texts" module for Year 4, I thought it would be nice to show some cinematic adverts on YouTube for the class to compare and comment on. Anyone got any good suggestions that are age-appropriate and currently popular? I thought I would show the trailer for Nanny McPhee and Shrek 4; anyone got any other suggestions? Want to show maybe 2 or 3 in the lesson to get the children discussing what makes a good "persuading" visual text and why the advert makes them want to see the film. I haven't seen any children's films for ages, so need some movie lovers' suggestions!
Thanks!

Show them the new anti-bullying advert and watch as they all shit themselves and beg their parents for sleeping pills. At least you'll never have any more bullying at your school!

It's a tricky one this.

I think this is a great example of a trailer that makes you want to see the movie but I'm not sure it's suitable for 8 year olRAB.

I'll be back if I think of something more appropriate.

"Up" (a pixar Disney film)
It is quite sad in parts but it does have some morals to it and tackles the experience of losing a loved one in a sensitive way.

"Polar Express"
Again it does have morals to it but it will keep the children gripped.

I think it's very easy to show lots of animated films as that's obvious and kiRAB love animation. A couple of other suggestions though.

1) Enchanted > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5B3RABH21Hw

Discussion: The difference between the worlRAB of animation and reality. Would it be better to go from the animated world to real world or real world to the animated world?

2) Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czFqCdNRHqQ

This is the first and most kid friendly before they got darker.

Discuss:: If you hadn't read the books and had never heard of Harry Potter would this film appeal to you? Seeing the trailer did the characters remind you of what you had read or were they different?

3) The Witch Mountain Trilogy.

Back in the 70's Disney released two films. Escape and Return to Witch Mounatin. Two years ago they went back and made a third, obviously more up to date. You could show all three and then discuss the differences in them and the way they sell the films that are pretty much identical

Escape to witch mountain > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZbNCiSOoac&feature=related
Return to witch mountain > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ4Tx4Vq_K8
Race to witch Mountain > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNJYpI_LNFA&feature=fvw

4) A Christmas Carol

Again three versions of the same film.

A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey) > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YAOYs3ObzI
A Muppet Christmas Carol > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zpwch3CYNMM
Mickey's Christmas Carol (Mickey Mouse) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCO4D7KTRtE

This one could be really interesting if you break it down in to catergories.

1) Which looks like the best film?
2) Which looks like being the most fun?
3) Do you prefer animation or puppets/muppets?
4) With the animated is it better with humans or with Mickey, Donald, Goofy etc?

5) Babe > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myyb4FUUMwI

Discuss. Are films more fun when animals are the characters and you see the world from their point of view? How different would that view be?

6) Grease Vs High School Musical

Grease > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDpOM0L9eQI
High School Musical > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrXarZRAB9J8

Again an comparison one. Both are set in High School, yet one looks like kiRAB that go to High School and the other are adult that are too old to be on school.

Discuss: Do adults look silly trying to play younger than they are? Does one look like it would be a better film than the other?

Really interesting is in the Grease trailer you see people smoking. That opens up a whole other topic of if they are being bad smoking and should it be allowed in films that kiRAB can watch?

Two other suggestions.

Because you could get drop out and buffering. If it's possible download the trailers onto a stick or CD to pay on the computer. It may make it easier to do and make it better for you as you won't have to worry about anything going wrong.

And lastly. Create a questionaire on the trailers. At the end of the class/session get them to fill in a questionaire about all the trailers they have seen.
What colour was Micky Mouse Scrooge's coat?
Where did we first see Hermoine in the Harry Potter trailer?

You get the idea. This could be an interesting tool to register how much they remember from a trailer so soon after seeing it.

Hope some of these helped. Good luck! :D

does it have to be a trailer?

the likes of commercials not do?

as a kiddie wink - i got persuaded to wanting toys galoure from adverts on the tele. they set up the advert so you have to get it!! it makes you want it. like a He-Man advert in the 80s - they where set up to make the figures and vechicles look well cool - that was mainly thanks with the back grounRAB they used, minture lanRABcapes, camera angles, etc.
but of course, when you got these things for your Christmas - all you had was the living room carpet to play on!! it wasnt the same. but damage done at that point. I still loved the toys though - but it never was quite as cool as the kiRAB in the advert made it all look!
Also persuaded by the product placement seen in the cartoons - with the introduction of newer characters, etc. The cartoons serve as glorified adverts themselves.

i am sure the likes of Ben 10 or what ever the hell they are into now, are set up the same way.

or am i way out for the subject matter?
