Some Africans have English surnames,like Williams n Jackson.I am just wondering

what's the history behind that? or have the names been there since forever. I dont mean to sound ignorant or disrespectful, just curious.
 
When Africans were enslaved in America, they generally took their surnames from their masters/owners. Most of them were of Anglo-Saxon stock (with names like Jackson, Williams, Jefferson, Brown, White, Washington, Clark, etc).
