My boyfriend and I sold a jeep for $500.00. And this woman that we sold it to, gave us a check with $500.00 on it. She sounded so excited to get the jeep. She even told us to go to her bank and cash the check. (but she was tweakin!)
When my honey went to her bank, they denied him due only having a driver's lic and no other form of ID. He asked if his SSN would be another form of ID, and they said no.
So he went to my credit union and had a success of cashing the check. The CU said it cleared.
About a week later, I got a letter in the mailing stating that the check that was cashed is an altered check. *I got this letter on Saturday* It shows a copy of the check.
I called my CU yesterday and they said, they can't do anything about it. Until I talk to the lady and see if she would pay it back. And give us the jeep. She refused to pay it back. She lost the title to our jeep. We took the plates back. Now since the jeep was parked at their place, its been towed due to no valid lic plate. But the CU should have double checked with Wells Fargo and asked if the check would clear or not. And I feel the the credit union has been blamed in a way they aren't keeping an eye out for their members.
Today we are going to police to report the check as fraud.
Is there any advice I can get while all this is going on?
This is for the state of Utah.
We are being a victim of a fraud check and NO help from anyone (The Credit Union - Our parents - advice is okay but not to the best)
It's messed up...
If you have experienced this... what did you go through? Were you able to get any of the money back from the Credit Union/Bank?
What was good about it? What was about it?
Anything as advice or story telling is best to know what we might go though.
