solar power alternative energy photovoltaic cell panel help explanation?

could somebody please give me a good explanaton of the process illustrated...I need it for a presentation but I don't really understand the whole charge controller/inverter/battery thing

Very expensive and subject to high winds. I installed $10,000 worth in the Ecuador jungle and it was a very remote site so the expense was justified. Then a storm came and blew all the solar panels away.
