Software questions from new T/X'er

Sorry if I'm abusing my emails here, I really appreciate all of your help.

I purchased a T/X from Office Depot today and decided to also pick up "Documents to Go" by Dataviz for $50 (it includes Word, Excel, & Powerpoint).

Some questions:

1. Was this a smart purchase? What are the benefits of using these over what already comes with the T/X? I use Word and Excel constantly on my PC and was afraid that what came with the T/X would not compare.
2. I see on their website that for $90 dataviz offers Documents to Go total office, which adds Smartlist to Go and Beyond contacts. Is Beyond Contacts necessary to effectively use emails and sync with Outlook on my PC? If this souped up package is worth it, I'l return my $50 package to office Depot before opening it.
3. I see there's a lot of freeware out there available for my new T/X. Any advise on what I should avoid or free programs you've had good success with? I was immediately looking for something to create a shopping list.

Thanks a ton!

Hey again ApartmentKing!

I'll try have a crack at this one, but I'm sure there'll be better posts coming your way! First of all, a major congrats on getting your new handheld! You must be absolutely stoked! Well, at least I was when I got my T|X a couple weeks back. But since then, I've sorta been reluctant to use it, because it wasn't properly protected. I've now got a Imnopocket metal hard case for it and screen protectors on the way ..

Well, whether you return DocumentsToGo really depends on what version you got for $50 and what you think you'll be doing on your PDA ... will you be just making minor edits of files, creating office files from scratch? Have a mess around with the pre-installed DocumentsToGo, and see if that'll suit your needs. It should be noted, that the pre-installed version is 7.006 (i.e. not the latest) and not all features are available in it ... like SpellCheck, Chart Wizard. Here's a link to the differences amongst the DocumentsToGo range. The T|X has the Professional Edition.

Smartlist and beyond contacts hey?! I reckon, if you really want to get your money's worth and get a good contacts management program, get iambic's Agendus - ha, Mooseman must be happy to hear me saying this! :D It uses the Palm's original PIM files (note pad, memo, contacts, todo), syncrhonises with Outlook and Palm Desktop and is relatively neatly laid. Does a fantastic job though ... think of combining all four of the PIM features in one program, and more ... even has a free time locator! But get the trial versions for Agendus, DateBK6, BeyondContacts and see which best suits your desires ... as I keep saying, everyone's different :)

Also, if you're thinking of upgrading just to take advantage of one or two features, say for example being able to read in Native PDF, just remember to check the availability of 3rd party software first ... it may work out cheaper for you, and may even deliver the same, if not better performance. Just to follow on that example, PalmPDF is a good, free, native PDF viewer (no I'm not sponsored by them! :p )

Hmmmmm, good freeware??? TS-Wheel of Fortune is always good for laughs! Hope other people come up with better ones so I can start downloading too!! ;)

I'm guessing for $50 you picked up Documents 2 Go Premium. Although the TX comes with the Professional (version 7.006), you can go to the DataViz site and download the premium upgrade for 29.99 and save yourself $20.00. If you haven't opened the package yet, I'd return it to Office Depot, do the download, and spend the $20 on something else you need. But that's just me....(squeek! squ-e-e-k!)

Check the DataViz Site for the offer.

Cheers,
John
