Softening water for fish tank?

I have extremely hard alkaline water. Ph of 8, Kh & Gh of 300. I got a Brita system and that seemed to help. I mixed tap and filtered water 50/50. My ph is now down to about 7, Kh to about 120, which the scale says is ideal. The nitrates and nitrites are nil. Why is my Gh still so high? Nothing changed. What can I do to fix it?
Oh, and I have a 20 gal tank. Thanks.

Don't change a thing, nothing is broken. Stop over complicating or you will only dig yourself a hole.

Your numbers are suitable for almost all the fish we can get our hands on. My own ph is 8.3, has been for years. My fish are long lived, my tanks are disease and problem free. Some fish like my "soft water" nicaraguensis have even bred for me in my water.

Trust me, leave your water alone and just use it as it is out of the tap (treated with conditioner of course). Complicate things less and less will go wrong.

Just so you know, the numbers you see 'recommended' for fish mean nothing, they are actually just an estimation of the fishes natural habitat. We can account for the fact that they are more tolerant than this, and that most of our fish are captive bred anyway. Seriously, you are wasting a lot of effort and time messing with the water when you don't really need to.
