Soft Large Knot Under Arm Pit

My husband has a soft knot under his left arm pit. It is the size of a softball. He tells me it hurts. Can you tell me what you think it might be. I am trying to get him to the doctor, but you know men. Some times they try to be tough.
 
The size of a softball???? How long has he had it? Any other symptoms? I don't know what it is but would def. have it checked out - that's a pretty big lump. Could be something simple that just needs draining.
 
It could be a severely swollen lymph node. If it's been there more than a few days, make an appointment with a doctor. If he also has a fever, make it soon.

I had something like that as a teen, though, and it went away by itself after about 2 days! Still have no idea what caused it.
 
He has no other symptoms and I was thinking it might be a swollen lymph node. I am going to try and get him an appointment Monday. Thanks for all the advice.
