The other day, I was in a local library, speaking to a guy in his late 20s/early 30s (i would guess), and im 17. I met him because I was reading a book and he asked me what I was reading, and the conversation went from there, we talked about different things, and he made this observation that when he was growing up, society didn't have all these labels and disorders to explain every human feeling. For example the word 'depressed' didn't even exist, but now, when youre feeling a bit sad, suddenly its "oh, im depressed", when actually its maybe just because that day or week things werent going completely right, or like when someone sees two gay people kissing and looks away its "homophobia", why can't it just be first reactions?, if you tell a joke that is not completely politically correct, all of a sudden its "racism" "sexism" (this guy was black), why cant it just be "observation" and this made me think about this labelling culture, so what I wanted to ask was
if youre around that guys age or older. do you know what he means? if so, could you elaborate more
also, what do you think the reason is for all this labelling? and what can i do to be free from it?
Thanks alot!
