Hi :)
What do people think of british social realism films, are they depressing or a relief to hollywood glamour
im doing an exam on women in film and your views would be a great help!!! :D
 
Most of what they class as social realism is far from it. Hence why a lot of films set "up north" have the same set of actors used regardless of situation. (This is especially true with tv dramas.) But I'm waffling.... If you like that sort of thing, then of course you will see them as a good alternative to Hollywood.


However I really wouldn't rely on an internet forum for exam advice.
 
An interesting question to ask is: do we need them? In terms of audience, are they watched? There are other alternatives to Hollywood, that the incredible rise of Asian cinema is tapping into. Also, it's funny to note that Mike Leigh is far more popular in Continental Europe than in the UK. Why is that?

Do we need them for what they actually say? Are they bringing any new issues to the table? I'm not an expert on this, but it might be worth looking at two or three "SR" films from each decade and see what they deal with. Have they changed?

Taking a different angle, one could ask why there are so many of them. My own feeling is that they reflect the availability of public grants. When government bodies get involved in film finance, they inevitably tend to favour SR films over entertainment. The same thing happens in other countries.

Just a few thoughts. I'd be interested to hear from someone that knows more about the genre.
