soccer drills/techniques applying in the actual game?

I play for U12 travel team. We practice different individual/group drills during the week for three days and then we have the regular game on Sunday. Whatever we are practice during the week, the coach encourages/wants to apply that in the game as much as we can. It seems like that even though I am doing pretty well in the training sessions and am able to comprehend what the coach is trying to get out from me, in the field I tend to forget most of the coach's advice and just play my own way. Because of that even though my skill level (i.e. proper passing, shooting etc.) improved I am having problem taking the game at the next level. For example -I play as a midfielder and my coach asks me to keep the ball little longer when I get the ball, dribble few steps, scan the field and then make the appropriate pass, or whatever. However, when I get the ball, I just tend to pass it quickly to the guy who I see first instead of keeping it to myself.
I hope I was trying to explain my problems. I am a bit frustrated! Please help!
