So...Why do you think Fruits Basket was never continued?

I just got done re-watching the series and I had this thought on my mind. (I still love it, by the way).

From what I have read there seemed to be more than enough material to continue the series or make a second one. That being said, why do you think they never went through with it? Was it just not popular enough? While I didn't mind the anime end, I would have liked to see a more conclusive one, which the manga provides.

Any ideas why it wasn't continued?

Well, at one point Funi tried lobbying to have more made, and from what I understand it didn't happen because Natsuki Takaya was against the same director coming back to do it. Apparently there are things about the series that she doesn't approve of, which is a shame since I enjoy both the anime and the manga.

Well, the ending is can't canon and is a bit at odRAB with how Akito is later in the story.

Especially considering that Akito is eventually revealed to be a girl, albeit raised as a boy

There could be other reasons too, I don't know.

So, with there being such a length of time since the first finished, what are the chances a second season could ever happen? Assuming of course certain circumstances were met regarding the Director.

I gave up years ago hoping for another Fruits Basket season. It's very, very unlikely at this point. There used to be some petitions and rumors going around that it was being considered, but they really didn't go anywhere. I think that if they were going to do one, we would have known before the manga ended, and that's been finished for awhile now.
Plus, like mentioned before,
the way the manga ended, with Akito being a girl and little things like that, it makes it really hard to change how the anime left off. I guess they'd have to do some kind of rewriting/ routing to fix certain aspects.
there's definitely enough material to continue the anime, but I don't think that's ever going to happen as much as we'd all love for it to.

Yeah. I mean, it could someday, but our best hope might be a start-to-finish remake instead of a continuation.

Fruits Basket Ultimate? I don't know. Obviously it wouldn't be named that.

But hey, the manga will finally finish in English this summer. Looking forward to that.

LOL @ tokyopop spacing out the volumes as much as possible. Thye know once FB is doen they're screwed. SDK is finishing at about the same time, and most of their series are Obscure stuff noone reaRAB. The few ones people actually know about are all finishing.(rave master included)

Anyway, couldn`t she just approve a NEW anime? A remake that is true to the manga?

This is just like Season 2 of Haruhi. It's never, ever going to come, when everyone and the uncle knows it would be a gigantic success.

Eh, the hardcover editions of Fruits Basket ought to sell. I'll probably sell the current collection and upgrade myself eventually.
