So what is Vista even like?

i dont like it. friend got it on his new [bargain] dell and it lags. he's switching back to xp. after using xp for so long, vista just didn't feel as smooth to me when i messed around with it

You must have done some seriously bad shit to your installation of XP. Vista requires three times the resources to run as fast as XP does.

I read, yesterday, that someone is re-starting up the class suit against nVidia. As for Creative, I think that Vista has minimised the company as a whole; but at least OpenAL seems to be working.

The only problems with most games right now are the somewhat immature video drivers from the chip makers (especially F*@#ING nVidia). I expect most of that will shake out by summer at the latest.

it definitely is not up to its full potential yet, but i have high hopes. honestly, its better than i expected by a lot. once driver issues ^^ get sorted out and they work out the bugs, its gonna be the only way to go.

I'm finna try this on the laptop. I had the beta on it and it ran quite nicely actually.

I don't trust it for my PC, there's too much shit I really don't need to fuck up now.

I REALLY don't give a shit about the whole DRM thing.
By the time I give a shit about HDDVD or BluRay on the PC it will probably be a non-issue.

The one where you had to view the web media? If you did it for off and vista, you need to fill out a W9. I refused to do that and just replied that i want only vista. Got my copy about 3 weeks ago

So...does anybody on OT pay any attention to this sort of thing or not:

http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

...after reading that and several other sources (Google "Vista DRM"), it seems that Vista isn't all that great after we get past the glossy veneer and a few tantalizing extra features...?

oblivion runs fantastic at medium/lowish details at 1024x600 on my e1505 with an x1400, 1GB of ram, and a T2400 Core Duo.

Guild wars runs fine...Battlefield 2 is slow as shit at first(which is expected imo with 1GB of memory) but it will run great after the textures load into the pagefile or whatever.

XP runs comfortably on a 2GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM. I don't know how many times I've heard people say "I put 2GB in my machine before installing Vista, but the third GB really improved things." Those are the same people who are making arrangements to upgrade to quad-core as soon as they can afford to.
