Actually I've read the whole thing way before you posted it. It's crap. It makes some very faulty assumptions and has a very skewed perspective on the issues it covers.
 
I bought a new computer (which was a steal ) and it had vista pre-installed (not the ultimate one though). I liked it but I needed 2 programs for school and these were the 2 only programs that I used that weren't compatible with Vista. I had to switch back to XP but I can't wait to get some patches for these programs so that I can upgrade to Vista Ultimate. I had 1 gb of ram and it was a bit slow though, I'll probably upgrade when I get 1 more gb of ram and a new videocard.
 
After windows update, does your dock work? I have one from konfab that works fine, even though it's off.

Have you tried to do anything other than playback cd/dvd media?

How long have you had way too much RAM for your needs in your box?
 
I mean, does it blow your mind, man?

any good screenshots, I heard the desktop is kinda mac-ish

Im sure someday in the future Ill make the switch, but only if I can do it for free
 
Everything works except the built in weather gadget. It worked in RTM but doesnt work now... I found a fix on google, but too lazy to do it.

Other gadgets works fine. All updates installed, installed bunch of my work software everything works.

Remote Desktop, VLC, few games, Firefox 2 ( needed a fix to get working).

Other then firefox and weather gadget everything worked out of the box.
 
I bought a Dell e521 (I know ) but there was a 25% reduction so I jumped on it and I don't regret it. I had to upgrade soon anyway and it was MUCH cheaper.
The software that weren't compatible were SPSS (a statistics program) and a VPN client (which gave me access to peer-reviewed journal databases at my uni).
The allow thing was annoying too but not that much.
 
All of the available updates are either definition updates, language packs, Ultimate Extras, or to address functionality issues (App compatibility updates, performance issue with the IE7 anti-phishing tool, etc).

0 security updates and 0 verified exploits so far.
 
Aside from pretties, most of the control items have been overhauled to work smooth like buttah. The left pane introduced in XP is now useful, the address bar in Explorer is replaced with breadcrumbs, tons of visual and interface features that make use of your 3D horsepower that's been wasted up till now (like Apple did with Quartz Extreme) such as real-time window previews and thumbnails, transparency, etc. Nice little details like the new search interface and more functions incorporated into the taskbar. The Start Menu is like 100 times better than either the new one in XP or the classic model. And gadgets which are useful little mini-apps always at your fingertips, like the Widgets in OSX.

For the most part it isn't mind-blowing. It's just... good. But really good.
 
It's cool if you have the system to run it. It will run on almost any system, but on slower systems it's no better than XP. All the negative hype about DRM is bullshit. Hasn't stopped me from doing anything. My only complaints are a)You need a fast system that many people do not have(stupid on microsofts part, but doesn't affect me), and b) a lack of drivers and shitty compatability with tons of mainstream software(autocad, all my trading software, and music production software).
 
similar story here. my pc broke down, and buying a new pc involved all sorts of vista headaches; if i bought an xp then i'd have to buy vista separately and its too fucking expensive, and there were no comps with vista. by that time i was sick of xp, so...

osx! i love it




this doesn't apply to me; no-one uses osx in this country. someone using osx actually gets seen as 'omg weird geek lolz', not a 'cool kid'
 
I have been using vista since beta 2 for software testing. I am using the rtm version on a newish laptop right now and honestly it is a great os....that still has some bugs. As is to be expected.

As a dev vista means real support for wpf, wcf and workflow. Those will be the foundation for apps that will make vista a must have.

As a user it is a little annoying at first and the security model seems a little obtrusive. But it is configurable so i can't complain too much.
