So what do you think of this??? (female joining army)...?

Hi!

I am going to be a senior in high school in September and my main goal in life is to become a nurse anesthetist. But I don’t feel that I am ready to go straight to college. So I want to join the army and become a combat medic, so this way I can get more experience before I go to nursing school. But my family kind of objects to this, they tell me I am a pretty and smaller girl (119lbs)and should not join the army, because I would be harassed by other soldiers. Personally I don’t think that is a good enough excuse for my not to join. I am an extremely athletic girl and a tough one.
What are you thoughts on this? I am defiantly joining, I want experience something else before I go forth with my life.

Would you say the Army Reserves is better? Or the National Guard.
Please explain more about each…Which is most likely to get deployed..?
What exactly do you do in the army if there is no war going on?

your not a combat medic until you've seen combat and earned your CMB.
anyway, as a chick you wont end up with the line. no offense, just how the army works. closest thing you can be in is a BSB (support battalian) or a BSTB (special troops battalian. intel, mps, combat engineers). in a bsb you would run supply missions...which is just driving from your base to another base then back to your base. in a bstb you would go out with the MPs if they were going to be searching or treating female patients. combat engineers tend to take male medics out with them just because of their physical ability (im not sexist, but can you honestly lift a 160lb soldier plus his 60 pounds of gear onto your sholders and run to cover with him? or even drag him?).
you could also end up in a hospitol or clinic setting. that might honestly be best since: as a nurse you would be working in a hospitol so you'd have experience in that setting and your family would be happier since you'll be in a safe setting.
also you could try to get M6 in your contract. thats a LVN, it would get you on your way to your life goal.
running around on missions in iraq sounds like fun...until your there and you realize its a 130 degree heat and your carrying a 90 pound load (about 35 pounds of body armor+20 pounds of ammo and gear+a 35 pound aidbag) for the next 10 miles... and your air support took off and doesnt know when they'll be able to pick you back up because a sand storm just hit.
if you want the most out of the army, go active duty. if you want to be able to pick your unit and go to school while in the army, go reserves or NG. you wont get as good training as the active duty folks get though.

just to a few above posters:
the army crammed its medic mos's into 1: 68w which they titled "health care specialist". medics in hospitols, with the line, or even with rangers are all this base MOS. yes girls can sign up to be 68w. as to the pararescue comment: your an idiot. pararescue is air force special operations. sorry but no women allowed in that.

i would recommend you for the air force or reserve if you'd like after all, i dont think that the army allow women to be a combat medic though but i think you can be in the airforce. its pararescue, theres alot of other jobs thats related to nursing!!! lemme know when you are interested, ill let you talk to my recruiter.

Go for it. It's great experience, no matter what job you do. The only way you'd be harassed by the other Soldiers is if you act like a girl and don't pull your own weight, forcing them to cover down for you. Good luck!

Sexual harassment and discrimination is prosecuted enthusiastically in the modern military in any branch.

The National Guard... it depends heavily on what unit you get associated with. Look into the units closely before taking that step. I don't care for sitting around, so I was very picky about which unit I joined; we were always doing something.

I have no experience with the Reserves, except seeing those folks around active duty commands.

Why not active duty? More training, more experience, more opportunities to do something different.

When there isn't a war on.... disaster relief, training, humanitarian aid, training, in the case of medical folks - taking care of service members and their families just like any other hospital or clinic.

We still need people to join, and I commend you for joining! You have to be a very strong person to join, not just physically but mentally as well, and I can see how determined you are to do this!! My ex was in the National Guard and he loved it. It was the best time of his life. They all get deployed equally, one doesn't go more than the other. Good luck though!

the guard and reserves are a joke, sorry, just the truth.

i knew a pretty girl who became a medic for the adventure. she wanted to jump out of planes, go to war and such.

you will gain experience, you will be protected from male soldiers. there's a lot of ugly girls in the army, so you might get looks and guys hitting on you but rules are stricter than in civilian world. your sgts will always look after you.

ng deploys more. reserves go too, unless you get non-deployable.

going regular, you make more money. just MAKE SURE you get m6 attached to your 68w in your contract. That is your deal-breaker there.

It means you become a combat medic after 14 weeks at Ft. Sam and then spend a year being paid to go to school and work at BAMC, which is a worldclass hospital. so you get your experience and you become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

The difference between an RN and an LPN is the RN does more paperwork.

If you deploy, it would be after almost 2 years from now by the time both wars should be over. Anyways, you're a female so you would not be outside the wire. You'd work in a hospital there. A BAS is as close as you can ever hope to come to the front-lines, but chances are good you will never see a BAS and just work in a hospital because you're a mike6.

So make sure you get 68wm6 in your contract. Its so much smarter than paying yourself. The army puts you through school and you get job experience, some great benefits.

Hey if you hate the Army, you can always become pregnant and that will be your ticket out.

good luck. trust me, unlike others who may mean well, i know exactly what i am talking about, i am a medic.
