So...what do you think of Daria?

I've been watching episodes of Daria over the past month, which can get difficult some time because episodes get taken down, and usually I find a new episode at least once a week to watch.
I never got a chance (or gave it a chance) to watch it when it came out, mainly because I detested MTV. I kinda fell in love with the show, because of the characters, especially Daria, who despite her cynical and monotone voice has a lot of depth. And Jane cuz she's funny.

So what do you guys think of the show?

This is the best thing MTV has ever done IMHO. The show is so sharp, it's hard to believe the drones who watched N*Sync's videos at the time would help the show go to five seasons. I would love DVDs of it, but due to the music rights, that's not gonna happen (All That won't, either. Just a reminder.)

i never understood that. if they asked if they could use it before, why would they need to again? I heard a similar problem keeps Muppet Babies from coming out on DVD, even though they had several episodes come out on video during the 90's.

Anyhoo, since I got the two Daria movies on DVD, each with two bonus episodes without the music, that shouldn't hinder them the chances of releasing the entire series too much. The only time they used the music was during the eyecatches and on the closing credits. And since they replaced the closing credits music with the theme song and don't use the eyecatches on the DVD. It's more than possible.
I think it's only a matter of time before it gets released, and I look forward to when it occurs.

I liked the show, it was clever, had intereseting characters, and Daria herself was one of the better animated creations ever. I did somewhat feel the feminist thing got a bit heavy handed at times in some of the eps, but it was one of the better animated shows, period.

Hated Tom, loved the show otherwise.

I need to go back and finish watching the high school musical episode. It looked like it was getting pretty good.

Daria: "Can you point those in the other direction?" XD

I've always liked watching it,but actually haven't gotten to see that many episodes(it was rarely on when I was home)....I do have the two movie DVDs,though...
I like Daria (she's smart and funny,plus I like her voice)....Jane is pretty funny,too....

The problem, basically, is this:

Daria didn't have an original soundtrack. All of the music on the show (except for the original theme song that was performed by Splendora) was (then) popular music by the original artists. If the series were to be released on DVD with the songs kept intact, the studio would have to pay the artists (or their estates if the artists are deceased) and the record labels a royalty for use of them (This is also why iit took so long for a DVD relase of WKRP In Cincinnati and why we're still waiting for DVD releases of Miami Vice and China Beach) Of course, it would be possible for Daria to release a DVD set with all the popular songs replaced by generic background music.

In the case of Jim Henson's Muppet Babies, it wasn't the music, it was the fact that every episode used copyrighted material from various movies and TV shows, which would cost a lot of money for a DVD release of the show, and video clips would be harder to edit out and replace than background music, which is why Muppet Babies will probably never see the light of day again. And yes, they were able to get away with this on VHS, but different media, different rules.

It's the third most successful cartoon on MTV next to Beavis & Butthead (seven seasons) and Celebrity Deathmatch (six seasons, maybe more).

It's a pretty damn good show as it chose to hit a very interesting target with it's characters and it's demographic. Great animation, great cast, some very nice writing, and plenty of good one-liners from Daria. All-in-all it's a great show that was a big surprise especially for the network running it. It just proves that, even though MTV takes occassional shotgun bursts of animated shows, a few of them ususally stick to the wall.

I'm a huge Daria fan. I would love to see it on dvd eventially. I have a friend that has a bootleg dvd set of all the episodes. I've considered buying one, but I'm holding out hope for an official dvd release.

I am a huge, huge fan of Daria. The moment I saw ads for it back in 2000, I was intrigued by the premise (perhaps even excited), and I was hooked from the very first scene I watched (that being Kevin and Britanny trying to sell wallpaper to Mr DeMartino in "Cafe Disaffecto").

Many think the show jumped the shark with the introduction of Tom Sloane, but I disagree; I actually started to become disillusioned with the series in the third season, which is the weakest IMO. Seasons 4 and 5 brought Daria's quality back up, though I can understand why some fans would be unhappy over Daria becoming somewhat less cynical, and becoming friendlier with her sister.

As difficult as it would be, I would like a Daria DVD set with the music as it was originally - for me, some scenes wouldn't work without the accompanying soundtrack. Many scenes are imprinted in my memory with the song included - without it, they wouldn't be the same.

You see this on TV still? I've got a prize collection of the MTv episodes that I pull out every now and then. I love this show more than anything.

The only song I hope they wouldn't loose is "What do you Want From me?" (or whatever it's called.) from Quinn the Brain. I'd kill to find an mp3 of that. I'd figured there were a few more things in the show to cause problems besides the music, considering how much actual show was cut when it went to Noggin.

Downtown is released through a back door because the creator is a rebel.

Wow. I didn't know so many people enjoyed the show. I guess TV Guide was right on the money for voting her one of the top 50 best cartoon characters, and Wizards in their top 100 best animated series.

Nah. Besides what's on the DVDs, everything I've been watching I've found on the internet.

From what I heard the stuff that they cut out for Noggin was stuff they considered inappropriate, like Jake saying "dammit" all the time, and the bisexual in "Is it Fall Yet?".
Noggin might cut that stuff out, but MTV won't when they released it.

I've seen one episode. I've read about it, and I know her from Beavis and Butthead, but I never got to see the show up here in Canada (it was on cable but I don't get cable).

Want to watch it on DVD but it seems like it might never come out.

I watched this show back in high school, so for me this pretty much represents my teenagehood, though I liked the show less when Tom showed up.

I really, really wish someone would put this on DVD, as episodes scattered across the internet aren't good enough.

Daria is one of my favorite cartoons of all time. The last season really jumped the shark (Daria should not be worrying about typical relationship stuff, that's what her charm was, but I tolerated it because it was still Daria and was still funny) but was still good. I can really relate to her, especially when I was in high school. Kind of surprised MTV made it because it goes against everything MTV stands for (pop culture zombies, etc)

If you saw the "Daria" special with Janean Garafolo, they admitted that it reached anyone that went High School.

I'd never seen what they actually did at Noggin, so I'm not certian what was gone, just the complaints. Wasn't the Bi stuff in Is it College Yet? When the older girl asked Jane to bed. It was so real to me because I knew a girl that said it is a constant battle to fend off girls that want that. I'm a pervert so I don't think girl on girl is much more than play, but I can't understand it from a girls perspective.

I loved the show until they decided to get Daria and Jane into relationships. and I got incredibly tired of a good deal of the cast, especially the fashion club. I stopped watching full-time around the time of the musical episode, though I'm happy I did get to see the two movies.

No, that was in "Is It Fall Yet?".

Though I agree with some people that Tom wasn't a fun character, I like what he added to the show: more drama. It made me feel for the characters, and I'm glad both Daria and Jane's friendship came through in the end.

....but that's just my opinion.
