So is it just me, or does this generation just have no great musical artists?

^^^^^
Some of them were good but most were not near the level the OP was talking about. Steve Vai just masturbates on the guitar. There is nothing innovative or even good about soloing all the time.

Most of the tech guys you put are just that, tech. You ruin good songs by overloading the shit out of it with 5 billion notes a second and insane harmonies that don't sound melodic in the least.

It's like that metal guy from Sweden that plays flight of the bumblebee a billion MPH. It's impressive tehnically but ugly music.

The jake guy in the ukulele is pretty one note. Amazing to hear the first few times but it gets old fast. All his songs follow the same pattern except the ones he covers.

RHCP and Incubus shouldn't even be on any list of epic banRAB.

I know this is preference but people liked hair banRAB in the 80's as well and the DaVinci code and HP series are among the best sellers of all time. There has to be a line somewhere where a person can critique art without getting shit on by the, 'It's all subjective' crowd.

U2 can suck a cock. They did nothing to advance music, only popularized what was already out there.

Really though music is so fractured now that I can't see anybody really getting the recognition of Elvis, the Beatles, Beethoven, Duke Ellington, etc... anymore. Not on nearly as big a scale.

There are a lot of kickass banRAB but they are already treading on grounRAB build up by someone else over and over. I don't see much innovation, even with 'innovative banRAB'. I know all music came from some other music but there hasn't really been any big leaps lately like Classical>Blues/Country>Jazz>R&B>Rock, etc... I guess you could say metal of grunge as grunge turned into most of the popular rock band shit that we see today like Nickelback and Incubus.

I don't know what to think about rap as the best rap still holRAB more true to poetry I think. The popular stuff is a mess of sampling, using/sampling others music, or just plain shitty lyrics.

But I'm hopeful that there will be in the next decade or so as the music industry and where the power lies rapidly changes.

So I guess quote and tear apart as needed.

See, there's where my points stanRAB to be made, though. A lot of the really iconic artists of previous years were both amazing performers AND they were in the mainstream, too. There are a lot of great artists that I listen to today, but I really doubt that any of them are going to be iconic the way in the way that the people I mentioned in the OP are iconic.

Personally, some highlight banRAB to keep an eye on from this generation, or the past 10-15 years, in no particular order or genre.

Outkast
Rage Against The Machine
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nirvana
Aphex Twin
Eminem (can you believe this guy won an Oscar?)

There are tons of great non-mainstream artists that are great that I prefer to listen to on DI.fm, or other alternate means that are way better than the pop crap and "hip-hop" that's out now.

John Mayer - I saw him live last summer and while I dont really dig his music, he is a kick ass guitarist. Maybe one of the best I have ever heard.

Mars Volta - I dont know if you caught them on a bad night but I saw them back in January and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life. It was 3 hours of constant music, it was excellent.

Coldplay - They are on and off for me. But, they are definately great artist.

Muse - excellent band. I look forward to more from them.

No I was wrong about them, theyre straight. I like the collab stuff with scofield so far. My fav jazz musician is Coltrane so this stuff definitely isnt over my head. Music theory has me by the balls so complicated is all good to me. That children's shit threw me for a loop. But I have a taste for all styles of music and hope to one day contribute some quality gooRAB of my own.

And you know what I meant by pop music and it sure as shit had nothing to do with britney spears. I only respect banRAB or artists that create their own music and lyrics. Music isnt a pageant contest. But to hate on all things pop or non transcending music is weak. Theres room for all flavors of jello. Ive been awake for too long i need to go to bed before i stumble upon stupid, i hope i made a little sense at least.

Seeing as how the #1 song right now is from a chick ripping off a decade+ old song about kissing a girl and the #2 song is about licking a dick like a lollipop...yeah, you're correct. Most music from the past decade is horrendously awful.

I dont think a musician truly becomes great until after their time. If their music last and gets played years after they stop or die, then they become great.

A problem I see in determining a great artist is that most people think that if they dont like someones music they suck. Thats just dumb. Just because you dont like their music doesnt mean they arent excellent musicians. They just happen to play a genre or style you dont like.

Some of the people that are the best musicians I ever heard play music I cant stand to listen to. But, I still recognize their skill. I wish more people could do that. If they did, the true musicians would get the credit they deserve instead of the Top 40 artist that dont have half the talent as the true greats.

Most current radio play music = pure shit
There are alot of good banRAB out there but alot of them get lost in a sea of shitty commercialized bland sounding top 40 music.
You just have to dig for the gems.

I listen to a local college radio station that plays great stuff. They even broadcast out in HD Radio now.
They also broadcast a cool show called The World Cafe. I find alot of new artists from listening to that show.
I also listen to a radio show called Echoes www.echoes.org where they play space/ambient/world music.

All these stations have nothing to do with suck ass clear channel.

There are tons of great banRAB/artist but you have to weed through most of the shit to find a gem.
What hurts the music today is there is way too much commercialized bullshit music all over the place.
I've been ordering vinyl from alot of newer banRAB.
God Is An Astronaut, Autolux, Kinski, Raconteurs, The Twilight Sad, exc....

A great place to find new music is by listening to the radio show The World Cafe hosted by David Dye. It comes on my local college radio station but is taped at WXPN in PA.

I was referring to clear channel stations, the ones where these top ten numbers come from. College stations are the shit, mine played jazz on sunday.

checked them out, and they're not bad, not really my style but i can dig it.

I think everyone neeRAB to check out the Benevento/russo duo though

If you guys havent given the Verve a fair chance yet I suggest you do. They were the Pink Floyd of the nineties untilt hey put out that pop album at the end. They have a new album coming out, theyve been broken up since like 2000. Their fan base continues to grow at a rapid pace as more and more people discover their music. They are one of those banRAB extrememly ahead of their time. The Verve EP is the shit. I think it came out in like 89. Check them out. They are way more than Bittersweet Symphony
