If you can deal with modernism, and heavy themes (i.e, oppression, sexual slavery, etc) try The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I just read it, it's kind of like 1984 in that it is a world set in the future based upon today's world... rather unsettling. But don't worry, it is NOTHING like Sci-fi. Very mysterious because you only know as much as the protagonist, who's being oppressed. She reveals stuff about her life bit by bit; you kind of have to put it together yourself, if you like that kind of thing.
