...I learned that "USB Dead Phone" flashing feature works very well in Phoenix. The quick answer: don't try to flash from APAC to EMEA (EURO), it doesn't work. I have 'India WHITE' product code, and wanted to get 'EURO 1 WHITE' on my handset instead -- I figured it was worth a try, since the keypad looks 'normal' (US/Western). My E60 is working fine so it's not like I'd be without a phone if all h*ll broke loose.
Changed product code, ran Phoenix and flashed the right stuff. Dead phone, powered on briefly and then off -- at least I knew I had a chance to bring 'er back. First I tried Dead Phone flashing the same EURO1 f/w, but nope - it wasn't a mistake the first time, this f/w won't run on this handset. boooooo. I installed the APAC f/w file, ran the Dead Phone flashing again choosing the proper product code for my handset, of course if flashed just fine and booted right up.
Poking around the files, it looks like it's simply the 86byte boot loader and I could hack it (take the APAC bootloader, rename it to EMEA then flash with EURO1 files) but I'm not quite ready to frankenphone my E50 that much.
Oh well.
