Are they, or aren't they? And what is NATO going to do about it?

I don't think it's the official policy, but yes, certain rogue elements of the Pakistani government are helping them.

It was the Pakistani government unto Benazir that sent troops into Afghanistan to help the Taliban come to power in the first place. Her widow here most certainly has had connections with the Taliban in the past. Pakistan is probably hedging its bets. It knows that the US intends to pull out of the area eventually and it knows that the Taliban will still be around after it does so. My guess is that Pakistan will probably seek to have decent relations with the Taliban in the future if nothing else, then simply for the sake of its own internal security and stability.

Other than that Pakistan is pretty active in terms of the funding of rebel and terrorist groups, so it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that they are indeed supporting the Taliban under the table.

Pakistan is supporting Pakistan. They do what they need to to keep the taliban out of their main areas, and also want to cover their bases in the power struggle in Afghanistain. They pretty much have to do that, or face destabilization, and that isn't something that will benifit the US, especially considering they have nukes.

I'm curious as to how far they are willing to help support these types of groups? Since Pakistan has control over nuclear weapons.

yeah, but remember that nearly every other country in the world has multiple levels of shit going down at once.

civilian Govt
royalty
spy rings
military
etc....

They all hate each other, try to take over the whole country, don't trust each other.

That puts the US in a pickle, doesn't it? The US has been pumping billions into Pakistan's security for the past decade, and now we learn that part of that security is achieved by giving funds to the taliban to kill our own troops? If the US isn't willing to punish Pakistan, I guess it may mean the US pulls out of afghanistan sooner than later.

the pakistani "government" isn't in control of pakistan. at any given time, a number of groups within pakistan are supporting the Taliban, I believe that.
