Snapped Drive Belt, WTF

I have a 09 Streetglide with 10,500 miles on it. Go to my local Harley dealer to get a 10k tuneup and have pipes, intake and the works installed. Ride less than 100 miles and have my drivebelt break when casually shifting from second gear into 3rd! WTH? The dealer tells me a rock may have gone through the belt, are you kidding me?

Anyone have any sugestions? I think the mechanic did not adjust the belt properly when they performed the 10k inspection. Does not make any sense to me at all. No wheelies or burnouts either.

I would think if a rock went thru it you could see that on the rear pulley also, I'd check the pulley carefully and see if you could see any marks that look like a rock went thru. Did they dyno tune the bike while it was there?

Yes a rock or other object could have caused the belt to break, it has happened. Improper adjustment could also be to blame.
You may be able to tell if it was a foreign object by studying the belt and/or pulleys, it probably left a mark.

I had a small sliver of flint go through my belt. It didn't break and I dug out the flint. It left a mark in the rear pulley (couldn't see the front) and the wound in the belt started to fray after about 4k miles, so I replaced it then.

I read somewhere that most belt breakages are from the belt being too tight.

A friend of mine has an 09 SG. Broke 2 drive belts. They finally discovered something was wrong with the transmission, and replaced it under warranty.

This happened to me on my 01 RK about a year after I got it (new).. I think it had about a 1000 miles on it. I was kind of racing/screwing off, pulled out balls to the walls, hit second, went to third and hit the rev limiter quick, went to fourth, hit rev limiter and was slowing down... looked behind me and I was dragging my belt. Dealer told me I more than likely had a rock or something stuck in the belt blah blah blah... After spending $500 something to fix it, I don't "screw off" anymore.... My brother-n-law has the bike now with over 35k miles and no issues. who knows....

I buddy of mine spit out his belt in first taking off at a red light from stopped. Too much slack caused his belt to snap tight from slacked.
