Snake looking thing in my garden tonight?

Tonight I went to put some rubbish in my bin and as I looked out the ground there was this long, black thing that looked like a snake on the ground.

I'm terrified of snakes or anything that looks like them so didn't stay around looking to long before running in the house, lol.
It was also getting dark so I couldn't see it too well anyway.

From what I seen it was all black (no markings), quite thin but long (about 15inches) It didn't move at all and before I noticed it was there I was quite close to it and don't think it moved.

I looked out of my hall window about an hour later and it was still there.

Anyone know what type of snake this could be (I'm in the UK by the way)

If it was a snake, will there be more? I'm too scared to even go outside now :( Too scared to even go and take a pic of it.
 
I think you've seen the garden hose; put it away when you're done to avoid this situation.
 
It was more than likely a garter snake. That's kinda small for a garter though, maybe it was young. If it hasn't moved by tomorrow, it's probably dead.
