snails, good or bad for your garden?

I was in my Garden late last night & noticed Loads of snails ( big ones ) sitting on a wall I`d built for a rockery, the rockery wont be completed till next year, my Q` is. will the snails destroy any flowers that I plant in the future?
I dont want to kill the snails Maybe just deter them if possible if they are going to affect the flowers.

I`m a novice gardener
