SMS receive wonky with Cingular. (N80)

For the second time in as many weeks I've had to hard reset my Nokia to get it to pick up text messages again. It seems that this is the only way to kickstart my Nokia into receiving SMS from ATTWS/Cingular correctly.

Just want to know what on the phone is changed when I do that.

Also,

There apparently is two message center numbers for ATTWS/Cingular.

+19073769301 amd +19703769301

What do people have on their devices?

Yeah and it's the one that the customer service said wasn't used that's the one that actually works. The one that works for me right now is +19708319301

I have the same problem with my N80 and Cingular. It just stops receiving SMS messages and the only way to fix it is to format it. I tried the number you posted (+19708319301) and with this one it works for about a week before having to reformat again. With the other numbers it was just 1-2 days. One more thing I noticed is that when it stops receiving SMS battery life also drops to about half (it dies in the middle of the night even though baterry was almost full the night before).

Anybody else has these problems with Cingular/N80/SMS and found a solution?

I'm quite an avid texter and have not had any problems. A few weeks ago I didn't receive any messages for several hours, then got them all at once, but that was Cingular (cause other friends had the same thing). Call tech support and have them push a new SMS number to your phone?

I have spent over an hour with support on the phone a couple of times and no matter what they try only a reformat of the phone helps. Sometimes I have to reformat it 2-3 times in a row before it will start accepting SMS messages again. It is very strange but at least I now know I am not the only one.

What is the SMS message center number that you use? It could be specific to some of them.

I have 12099042010..i am in southern california. I have not had any problem receiving and sending sms (knock on wood). I did have two sms settings from Nokia setup wizard..I deleted the one which I was not familiar with.

I am actually in Tennessee but I don't think it makes much difference. I will try your SMS message center number too and see if it works better.

Right now I have:

V 3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (07)

I used to have the old firmware and I upgraded to the new one using the instructions on this site about a month ago. It didn't make any difference. Then I thought it was my 2Gb card. I removed it for a week but still the same issue.

Where are you located? Mine's been working pretty reliably in the last week or so.

Clearly there's some setting in the phone that causes this but I haven't found out what it is. I suggest that you back up your contents to memory card when you know it's working and restore when it stops working if that fixes it then you know it's a setting issue. I myself haven't figured it out either and Cingular hasn't been much help overall especially when they learn you're using an unlocked phone.

I went to the Nokia store on Michigan Ave, Chicago and they told me that sometimes the Preferred connection for the Text Message settings can change from GSM/UMTS to Packet Data but I could swear that when I was having trouble this was on GSM/UMTS.

I am located in Knoxville, Tennessee. I seriously doubt the phone switches to packet data from GSM, at least I haven't noticed this. The only thing I have noticed is that it works much longer (7-8 days) with some SMS message centers and only 1-2 days with some others. I have been dealing with this for about 2 months now since I got the phone and I have pretty much tried everything (from not enabling bluetooth to removing applications, upgrading firmware etc.).

At this point the only reason I can think of is that I used to be an AT&T customer and having an old SIM card, AT&T branded, somehow the phone is not compatible with it. But if this is the case how can it even work to begin with, even if it is for a few days.

The phone must be stuck in some kind of different mode though since it consumes battery at 2-4x the rate when it stops receiving SMS messages. And it is beyond me why sometimes I have to reformat it 2-3 times before I start receiving again.

Cingular has been of no help to me either but they are the only GSM choice here.

BTW, I really don't send any SMS messages, I just receive messages from work via SMS.

What I am trying now is +12099042010 as the SMS center, "Character Encoding" to "Full Support" from "Reduced Support" and "Message Validity" set to "Maximum time".

If anybody has additional ideas please let us know.

Well, this time it got stuck within a day. It is stuck right now and I have checked the Preferred connection and it is still set to GSM/UMTS for text. I even tried to switch to packet data and then back to GSM/UMTS and then tried a different message center number. Still nothing. Time to reformat again.

It must be a setting that is changed by itself. Here is what happened.

1. My phone stopped receiving SMS messages
2. I made a backup to the memory card
3. I reformat the phone
4. I start receiving SMS messages again
5. I restore from backup
6. I stop receiving SMS messages

This is going to drive me crazy. Anybody knows how I can see what is changed?

Very strange. Note I'm currently using an ATTWS branded sim card in my N80 and have done since March and only have had the SMS receive problem 3 times since then. As you say a reset fixed it but I didn't find anything settings that would explain why the phone wouldn't receive SMS at the time. The thing is there really aren't that many settings that control SMS receive.

I am still having problems with not receiving SMS messages unless I reformat the phone. It now happens every day! I even switched to Cingular's own service from AT&T and got their SIM card but it is still the same. Nobody else has this issue? Nokia basically said that it is Cingular's fault. I doubt it is, since any other phone works great and I can get messages as soon as I reformat the phone. Any ideas?
