:^/ Another interesting thing is that SMS messages can also be sent to/received from non-web based e-mail, which uses ports 25 and 110 instead of Cricket's 80 and 8080.

the sms center is handling the gateway between sms and email. the actual email is not being delivered to your phone. there is no need for ANY ports for this as SMS is not delivered through ip

:^/ Yeah, I see what you mean. But, when e-mail goes to/from my PC's non-web-based e-mail, it uses TCP/IP ports 25 and 110, which wap.mycricket.com doesn't support. So, as you said, there is a gateway which translates.

Soooo, might there be a way to use/hijack/leverage that gateway for VersaMail? Under the Tr

Versamail works great with a free MS Exchanged-based e-mail account from Mail2Web.com. Just head over to http://live.mail2web.com, and sign up for a free account. Log into your free account, goto Email Settings, then goto ActiveSync settings. Plug those server settings into Versamail, using the EAS servertype (EAS=Exchange ActiveSync), and you're good to go. Then just forward your mail from gmail or whatever you use, to your new @mail2web.com address, and you now have full send/receive e-mail using Versamail on your Treo. I've done this on a Treo 650, 700p and 755p. You can even configure mail2web to go check/retrieve from your POP3, if your POP3 doesn't support forwarding.

FYI, gmail will forward your new messages to any email you choose (the entire msg, including attachments) for free.. Yahoo will forward the first couple sentences for free, and hotmail doesn't do any forwarding for free... last time I checked...

Here's another cool address:
