smoking engine on ford truck?

I have a 1997 ford f-150 with a 4.6 liter v8 and it has about 221,000 miles on it, it runs good except for when I do a little more than average driving at a time it smokes, like say I drive for a half hour on the highway or just around town fro awhile, the engine starts to smell hot, that gauges all read normal though, and then it smokes from around the top of the engine, its not a thick smoke or anything but its for sure not hard to miss. its really irritating and everyone that I ask about it has no idea, and i have no idea, and I need help on what it could be so I can try and fix it, also ther is 2 spots on the intake maniflold above the fuel injectors, were there is soot like something is burning around them and that about the area the smoke is coming from, so im wondering if that might have anyhting to do with it... but I dont know what could be causing that either... and no there is no oil spilt on the engine either..... I need help

a few things could be wrong and a lot depends on the smoke...

white smoke is water or coolant... the more coolant in it the sweeter it smells... think water pump or cracked block...

blue smoke is oil smoke and could be leaking oil from the value cover gaskets, past the piston rings, or intake gasket seals...

Black smoke again could be oil related, but normally black smoke would indicate rich running... Think ignition problems, a blown ccylinder, head gaskets any number of things...

221,000 miles is a very long time for a V8, and you may have gotten all the miles out of it... you could rebuild it, or replace it...
