Smartphone Noob - Help!

I've always had a free crappy phone and I'm ready to take the smartphone plunge. Please help me pick a phone and plan. Details...

- Two phone household. Currently on T-Mobile 700 total min/free nights and weekends and within carrier/250 texts each/no data. After the corporate discount we pay a little under $75/month total. Reception is...fair, but acceptable.
- I live in Minneapolis and often travel around Minnesota and Wisconsin, and elsewhere to a lesser extent. No international travel in the cards for now.
- I want a smartphone and my wife wants a cheap phone. I'd prefer to keep us on a family plan but I can switch to two single plans if that's what works best.
- I'm off contract now with TMO and can go anywhere else.
- I like the Android world. I dislike AT&T and Apple products.
- I'd like unlimited data because I anticipate using the web and GPS apps all the time.

I think that about covers it. Thanks for any advice!

well since you dont like att, i say stay with tmobile. they are the ones that have all the android phones currently. att has none. so you could go with the older android g1. but the cream of the crop, top dog right now, is the nexus one. you can get it on contract with tmobile for 179 dollars, or buy it unlocked for 500 bucks. pop in your tmobile sim and off you go, works with tmobile 3g obviously too. that's the top choice at the moment.
