Smartphone & Data Plan

As of 9/5 if you get a new smartphone at &t will require a data plan. If you already have one you won't need a data plan till you upgrade. My question is what if I get an unlocked smart phone form the internet will my sim card work or is there any way at& t can tell if I have anew phone and shut down my sim card? Any help is appreciated.

Suppose you purchased a cell phone on e-bay say one of those that look like the I-phone. Would this type of phone be considered unbranded? If so would it work with at&t without them knowing?

If you currently have an at&t phone that has the 3g speed on your sim card and you purchase an unlocked cell phone that doesn't offer 3g will the phone not work or will just not be able to use the 3g speed?

I currently have a blackjack and am do for an upgrade. I am on the at & t premier plan through work. I got the blackjack because I liked the way it looked. I don't want to get a smartphone because I don't want the data plan. I wouldn't use the phone in that manner enough so it is not worth it to me. I was wondering if anyone knows of any place you can get unlocked phones that would be compatible with the at & t 3g card. Just wanted to see what is available besides the ones on the at&t website. any help or suggestions would be appreciated..One more thing..what is the difference between unlocked and unbranded?

An upgrade means that you purchase a phone from AT&T at a reduced price. Phones purchased elsewhere are not upgrades but may qualify as a PDA/BlackBerry and may require the proper data plan. Unlocked phones are of no consequence. The term you should be using is unbranded. An unlocked phone issued by AT&T would require the same data plan as a locked phone of the same model. You will have to wait and see how the carrier handles unbranded phones.
 
If your using an unlocked phone from another provider, you can get the unlimited data plan for $15 and it will still work..Just don't tell the rep you speak to what kind of device you are using ;)
 
Hello i purchase a iphone 2g 8gb off line and i was wonder how can i use phone without a contract service or unlocking
