Smart Phone vs Phone + PDA

Hello everyone!

I currently have a Palm T3 (bluetooth capable) that works fine, but I do not have a decent phone to work with it.

Here are my needs/wants:
1. Palm or Windows - I use medical apps that require either OS
2. Calendar features - preferably sychable with google calendar
3. J2ME capable if not a smartphone/pda
4. Relatively open carrier (? tmobile)
5. GSM preferred but not required
6. some web surfing/data use
7. small form factor
8. EDGE/EVDO would be nice, but not required.

So, first question...would I be better off getting a smartphone/pda or getting a regular phone and doing all my data stuff through the T3?

I am also VERY willing to buy a phone not available in the US, if it's a good phone, then do the sim card switcheroo.

Thoughts, questions recommendations?

Thanks
-Brian

I went from a Tungsten E and Nokia 6610 to a Treo 600 for about a month and a half. I liked the Treo as a phone, liked how I didn't have to enable IR on a separate phone and then keep the ports aligned just to send and receive e-mail--but couldn't get used to the smaller, low-res screen and the fact that using the PDA took battery life from the phone (and vice versa).

I ended up trading the Treo for a Nokia 6600 and getting a Tapwave Zodiac (and now have a Moto V195). Yes, it's two devices, but each is optimized for its purpose, and I can connect the Zodiac and V195 via Bluetooth when I want to send/receive e-mail or do any browsing.

I might have been able to stay with a Treo 650 (and would be thinking about the 680), but the 320x480 screen of the Zodiac has me pretty spoiled.
